Think about a scenario: the temperature reaches 95°F in rural Texas, the sun is at its worst, and a herd of sheep strolls across an array of solar panels, ducking between the rows as though going through a drive-thru, and basically, chilling out there for hours on end. This pattern of behavior is now backed by a peer-reviewed study from São Paulo State University in Brazil, a phenomenon that has shifted how Americans perceive solar panel farms. According to the 2023 paper “Shade of solar panels relieves heat load of sheep,” published in the journal Applied Animal Behaviour Science, researchers equipped nine Corriedale ewes with temperature loggers and followed their movements for 20 days straight.

The science behind the shade

Fonsêca et al. report in the Applied Animal Behaviour Science paper that during the sunniest hours, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., sheep in the shadow of photovoltaic panels received approximately 30% less radiant heat than those exposed to direct sunlight. Temperature at the wool surface of their bodies fell by 7 to 8°C, while skin temperature declined only by 1 to 1.5°C. Importantly, vaginal (core body) temperature remained constant in both cases, which indicates that most of the insulation was provided by wool, while the shading prevented overheating of its surface.

This finding builds on an earlier 2020 study, “Photovoltaic panels as shading resources for livestock,” published in Journal of Cleaner Production, by the same Brazilian research group, which found that when given a choice between solar panel shading and regular shade cloth, the sheep chose the former in an overwhelming majority. The flock spent 38% of their day under solar panels versus just less than 1% of their time under shade cloth.

Why this isn't just a Brazil story anymore

American solar grazing has become a growing industry. As of a 2024 census taken by the American Solar Grazing Association, more than 113,000 sheep were grazing on some 129,000 acres of land at more than 500 solar facilities throughout the country, with Texas hosting some of the largest deployments. In August 2024, Enel North America signed an agreement whereby 6,000 sheep would graze on eight solar facilities located in Texas covering more than 10,000 acres of land.

So far, the argument mainly revolved around cheap, gas-free lawn mowing. Another less-loud argument that is brought forth by the Brazilian study is that sheep may also benefit from solar panels in the face of heat waves becoming more frequent and more intense around the world.

This has a catch

Here lies the crucial point, because a study with nine sheep carried out in a particular Brazilian paddock may not serve as a dogma in all the solar farms from Vermont to Arizona. Nine sheep of one particular breed studied over the period of 20 days is quite a small sample, which can be considered helpful only to support some mechanism but certainly not to announce victory for the whole industry. The thickness of the wool, breed, regional climate, and the height of the panels make everything very different.

A sheep of Merino breed in the dry heat of Australia regulates its body temperature differently than a Corriedale sheep in the hot Brazilian tropics, and solar-grazing businesses often miss this when selling the "happier, healthier sheep" story. The researchers themselves are careful to frame this as an example of the cooling effect of shading panels, not a panacea to solve all problems with heat stress and automatically boost meat or wool production. That caveat doesn't undercut the finding, but defines its scope: a real, measurable cooling effect, demonstrated at a small scale, that still needs testing across breeds, climates, and panel designs before it can be treated as standard practice.

What it actually means for everyone

This is a perfect little example of good circular thinking on a tiny scale: rather than clearing land for solar and then mowing the cleared land into perpetuity, ranchers are letting animals mow and providing them with shade at the same time, while solar panels benefit from a chemical-free mowing service. It's a modest, well-documented result, not an industry-wide guarantee, but a genuine, measured data point in favor of pairing livestock with solar infrastructure. And next time you see a solar field with a herd grazing below, remember that they’re not just there for the scenery; they’re turning a knob on a little personal thermostat of theirs.
