What was found inside the fossil?
The fossil was discovered in Panzhou County in Guizhou Province and is described in a paper published in PeerJ in July 2026. The adult ichthyosaur was preserved with at least 11 foetuses inside its body. Their similar size and comparable stage of development suggest they were developing together and were close to being born.Some of the foetuses remained within the uterine cavity, while others were found outside the mother's body. The researchers suggest they may have been expelled when gases built up as the adult animal decayed. Scattered bones around the mother also raise the possibility that the original litter was even larger.
The preservation is particularly important because it makes the reproductive evidence easier to interpret.
“Whenever you hear about such a find, there is a fear that it has been over-sensationalised and the actual work won't support headline claims,” says Bethany Burke Franklin, a vertebrate palaeontologist with the Heritage Museum of the Texas Hill Country who was not involved in the research. She considers the analysis of the remains thorough.
How did ichthyosaurs give birth?
Ichthyosaurs were marine reptiles that lived throughout the Mesozoic era. Their streamlined bodies and pointed snouts made them resemble modern dolphins, although they were reptiles and included apex predators. The largest ichthyosaurs reached about 25 metres in length.Unlike animals that returned to land to lay eggs, ichthyosaurs were viviparous, meaning they gave birth to live young.
Evidence for this reproductive strategy has been known for centuries. Fossil remains from 11 ichthyosaur genera contain foetuses, while gravid specimens of the basal ichthyosauriform Chaohusaurus show that live birth was already established during the Early Triassic.
“Gravid specimens of the basal ichthyosauriform Chaohusaurus indicate that live birth was already established in ichthyosaurs in the Early Triassic. Live birth was likely a key adaptation of the clade towards a fully marine lifestyle, as it removed the need to return to land to lay eggs,” says Cole Counts, a doctoral researcher at Southern Methodist University who was not involved in the study.
Earlier researchers sometimes interpreted animals preserved inside ichthyosaur fossils as prey, including the possibility of cannibalised young ichthyosaurs. Later studies found that these remains lacked typical signs of digestion, such as disarticulated skeletons and acid damage.
The Chinese Mixosaurus fossil provides another strong example of foetal preservation rather than prey remains.
Why is this litter so remarkable?
Other Mixosaurus fossils have been found with only two or three pups. The newly described specimen contains at least 11, making it one of the largest preserved ichthyosaur litters known.Counts points to the reproductive variation seen among mixosaurids.
“Other species of Mixosaurus are preserved with two to three pups. Mixosaurids are among the most cosmopolitan reptile families of the Triassic Period, and this variation in litter size reflects a degree of flexibility in reproductive strategies. This versatility may have helped ichthyosaurs successfully proliferate across a wide range of ecosystems throughout the Middle Triassic,” Counts says.
However, the large litter should not necessarily be taken as proof that producing many offspring was responsible for the wider success of ichthyosaurs.
“While having loads of young is helpful for survival, it is not my understanding that this is an established approach taken by ichthyosaurs,” Burke Franklin notes.
One other Jurassic ichthyosaur specimen contains a comparable litter, but the newly described Chinese fossil is considered especially significant because its preservation is much better.
