The aircraft sat on the tarmac for three and a half hours without air conditioning as temperatures outside approached 104 degrees Fahrenheit, as per a report. Inside the sealed cabin, the heat climbed toward 100 degrees.
Greece was experiencing a severe heatwave at the time, forcing the closure of the Acropolis.
As the hours passed, passengers began struggling with the conditions. Some reportedly suffered nosebleeds and fainted, while others used oxygen masks. Videos from inside the aircraft showed passengers drenched in sweat and fanning one another.
The incident raised a question that many travelers might assume already has a clear answer: how hot is too hot for people inside a commercial aircraft?
Surprisingly, aviation regulations do not provide a simple temperature limit, as per The Pulse report.
A routine delay turned into a sweltering ordeal
The Doha-bound flight was preparing to leave Athens when a technical problem stopped the aircraft. Among those on board were about 49 Muay Thai athletes returning from a world championship.With the plane sitting on the ground and its normal cooling unavailable, conditions inside the cabin became increasingly difficult. Passengers were eventually given a cup of water and a small soft drink, but those supplies were described afterward as completely insufficient.
After three and a half hours, passengers were finally allowed to leave the aircraft. They spent the night in Athens before boarding again the following morning.
Why a Boeing 777 can become so hot on the ground
The Boeing 777 is designed to operate in hot climates, but its cooling systems work differently when the aircraft is on the ground.During normal operation, the environmental control system uses air from the engines, cools it and circulates it throughout the cabin.
A sealed aircraft sitting in direct sunlight can heat up rapidly, while the people inside add even more heat to the cabin.
Athens airport authorities told CNN that a sudden technical problem had prevented the flight from departing. The airline later apologized but did not specify which systems had failed, as per The Pulse report.
Aviation law does not set one maximum cabin temperature
The most surprising part of the incident may be what the rules do not say.There is no federal law in the United States setting a specific maximum temperature for a commercial aircraft cabin while passengers are already on board. There is also no international standard establishing one universal temperature limit.
General guidance encourages airlines to maintain cabin temperatures between 65 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit, but that guidance does not carry the force of an enforceable temperature limit.
Airlines can also establish their own policies. One major US carrier allows temperatures to reach 90 degrees before considering conditions too hot for boarding, while another uses an 85-degree threshold.
But those limits apply when passengers are boarding. Once passengers are inside and the doors are closed, there is no specific legal temperature at which an airline is automatically required to stop the process and remove everyone from the aircraft. That left the Athens passengers in an unusual regulatory gap as the cabin became hotter.
The incident added pressure for clearer rules
The Athens flight was not the first example of extreme heat becoming a concern on a grounded aircraft.Aviation labor groups have pushed for clearer federal standards, arguing that cabin temperatures can become a serious issue for both passengers and crew.
Congress addressed the issue in the 2024 FAA Reauthorization Act, which directed federal aviation regulators to work with a national scientific body on a study of cabin temperatures, as per The Pulse report.
The findings are expected to help Congress determine whether new rules are necessary. As per a Popular Science report, the findings are not expected before sometime in 2027.
Regulators reported in early 2025 that they had begun planning the research. But for now, the regulatory gap remains.
What passengers can do in extreme heat
Until clearer standards exist, travelers have limited options when an aircraft becomes extremely hot on the ground.Staying hydrated before boarding, choosing an aisle seat away from direct sunlight and telling crew members about any medical problems are among the practical steps available. Passengers can also ask for water and raise health concerns with the crew.
But those measures do not address the larger issue of when an airline should be required to stop keeping passengers inside an overheating aircraft.
