Long before "tiny home" became a hashtag, British designer and Grand Designs host Kevin McCloud was already living the trend himself. For the 2012 Channel 4 series Man Made Home, which aired from September 23 to October 13, 2012, McCloud set out to build a small, off-grid cabin on a plot of Somerset woodland, using little more than his own trees and other people's leftover materials. According to a Virginia Tech dissertation by researcher Maria Saxton, which surveyed 80 U.S. tiny-home downsizers, participants' ecological footprints fell by an average of 45 percent after the move. That may help explain why McCloud's shed still feels relevant more than a decade later.

A shed built from trees and trash

McCloud's first cabin followed a rule that every material had to come from his own land or from something someone else had thrown away. He cut down two oak trees to build the frame, used an old truck frame as the base, and constructed the doors, windows, and fixtures from the discarded materials he collected during his journey. It was small, self-made, and off the grid, the type of simple project that would have fitted perfectly into the modern trend of minimalism before that word even existed.


Moving day comes with a warning sign

A year later, in 2013, McCloud decided his shed could do with a new view. He had the shed delivered to a clifftop near Watchet on the Somerset coast. Because the shed was designed to be portable rather than permanent, he avoided some of the usual planning issues associated with building in the open countryside. Even the journey became part of the narrative. During transportation, according to The Daily Telegraph, the team attached a sign to the trailer which read “Caution, shed on tour,” a small joke that summed up how out there the whole build had become by that point.

The secret ingredient in the electricity bill

Once settled on the cliff, the cabin got a real upgrade. McCloud hired canal boat builder Will Trickett to fit a second-hand chairlift platform for panoramic sea views, a curved, ship-like exterior and a veranda rescued from a boat and steadied by a counter-balancing iron girder. The new building also had a spa in the open air, a bathtub created using an old jet engine, and a pair of ovens constructed from an old Russian sea mine. The build also experimented with small-scale biogas and biofuel systems, including a manure-based anaerobic digester, though it's worth noting these small on-site rigs are typically suited to low-power uses like lamps or burners rather than running an entire building's electrical load, so the extent to which it powered the finished cabin isn't entirely clear from available accounts. According to an Environmental Chemistry Letters review published in 2024, anaerobic digestion is a process that results in the breakdown of organic waste, such as manure, without using oxygen, creating methane gas that can be used to produce either electricity or heat.

Why young people can't get enough of tiny homes

McCloud's shed was ahead of its time in another way too. Tiny homes are attracting millennials and Gen Z as housing costs rise. Saxton's research, drawn from surveys and interviews with 80 U.S. residents who had lived in tiny homes for at least a year, found the change was more than a reduction in living space. However, it's worth noting that her subjects were people who'd made tiny living their permanent home, a different situation from a televised secondary cabin project like McCloud's. Many participants reported eating locally, growing their own food and eating less overall, which reduced their environmental footprint compared with their previous larger homes.

Salvaged materials are quietly rewriting construction rules

Reusing materials matters as much as the size of the home. Every year, construction and demolition debris comprise a large portion of the world’s waste, and building with reclaimed materials is one of the more practical ways to reduce that number. According to the review, ‘Sustainable construction practices with recycled and waste materials for a circular economy,’ in the Asian Journal of Civil Engineering, using materials such as reclaimed wood, recycled concrete, and fittings may help replace some of the raw material needed for construction, thereby cutting down on waste and emissions. While the idea of circular construction was yet to become a buzzword in the industry, McCloud had already constructed his own cabin from a tree and a chassis of a scrap truck.

The real message for anyone dreaming small.

The finished cliff-top project is reported to have cost McCloud £5,000 in total, a small fraction of what a conventional cliff-top holiday home would cost to build today. Whether or not viewers ever attempt their own biogas-powered shed, the appeal is easy to understand. It reflects the idea that a smaller, self-made home made from existing materials can feel more meaningful and lighter on the planet than one built from scratch.
