Storm damage changes the wreck
The problem was caused by a series of storms that struck the Central Coast region in mid-2024. Within weeks, waves and currents caused major structural damage to parts of the wreck. An inspection by engineers in November described the extent of the damage in a structural assessment: the superstructure, or the top part containing the bridge, the main mast, and the funnel of the vessel, had entirely disengaged from the hull and fallen into three large sections onto the seabed. The assessment identified failures in the connections between the aluminum superstructure and the steel hull, with bimetallic corrosion considered a likely mechanism affecting the welded connections over time.
This made the wreckage dangerous for anyone still trying to explore it. The passages and openings people once used to enter and exit the structure had become unpredictable because torn aluminum could shift in strong waves, trapping divers inside collapsed sections. The November assessment also found that parts of the debris field had moved and settled below the original dive depth. This increased the potential depth of some dives and, together with the unstable debris and blocked access points, added to the risks associated with decompression sickness and nitrogen narcosis.
The steel hull remains in good condition
While the initial assessment found several problems, not everything at the site was negative for the wreck. The latest structural assessment was obtained by NSW Crown Lands in February 2026 and examined the wreck and surrounding debris using multibeam and side-scan sonar mapping, along with targeted dives carried out during 2025. It found the main hull was intact with minimal damage, while the detached superstructure remained the bigger concern because sections had shifted and could continue to move.
Similarly, the 2026 assessment found seabed scour of up to about two meters near the vessel and identified significant currents close to the seabed. Its metocean analysis also examined how water flow is deflected and accelerated around the wreck, factors that could affect the movement of debris and the long-term stability of the hull. These findings add to the reasons the detached debris remains a safety concern for divers. The structural reports were focused primarily on the condition of the wreck and diver safety, rather than assessing impacts on fish or coral populations.

For now, access to the site is prohibited, and no date has been set for reopening. Two yellow navigational buoys that divers used as markers were dislodged by the storm, and Crown Lands is considering options including removing the debris or carrying out a controlled collapse of the superstructure. For divers who regularly explored the wreck, the closure is a loss. It also highlights the ongoing work needed to maintain the artificial reef and keep it safe over time.
