The measurement nobody had bothered to run
Dark-colored roofs heat up more than light-colored roofs. You know this if you have ever touched a black car hood in the summer. However, it is one thing to know about it, and another to prove it through measurements. In contrast to previous studies on similar topics, the Austin test used a real operational 100,000-square-foot commercial building, rather than a laboratory replica. The old roof was made of black rubber. The new one was made of white thermoplastic material. Same building, same insulation, same air conditioning system; the only difference was the color of the roof. This kind of real-world test, same building, same equipment, only the roof color changed, is why the study is still cited more than two decades later.
From 168°F to 126°F: What happened on the roof
Roofs absorb sunlight and turn it into heat. The darker the color of the material, the higher the amount of heat absorbed. Light and reflective surfaces reflect heat back to the sky, reducing heat absorption. The less heat the roof absorbs, the less heat reaches the building's interior. In this particular study, scientists discovered that the air trapped just under the roof, called the plenum, also cooled down from 101°F to 95°F. While that may not seem like much in comparison to the temperature of the roof surface, the plenum is positioned directly above the air conditioning system in the store, so even a few degrees there change how hard the machines have to work.

Here is where it gets practical. The 2001 study found that the white roof reduced the total energy consumption of the air conditioning system by 11% and decreased the cooling peak demand of the building by 14%. It was projected that changing the roof color resulted in annual savings of about $7,200 in energy costs and incurred virtually no additional labor and material costs relative to a regular roof change. Across many big-box stores, warehouses, and office buildings in hot cities, those savings can add up quickly.
Why one rooftop measurement became such a big deal
This is not just a story about one Texas store. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports that in air-conditioned residential buildings, a cool roof may reduce peak cooling demand by 11% to 27%. Austin's 14% peak-demand reduction falls squarely within that range, despite the fact that this building was a commercial property rather than a home.
There is also a larger perspective to consider. Cities tend to be hotter than rural areas, a phenomenon known as the "urban heat island effect." In a paper titled 'Cool surfaces and shade trees to reduce energy use and improve air quality in urban areas' published in the journal Solar Energy, researchers Hashem Akbari, Melvin Pomerantz, and Haider Taha reported that the installation of light-colored and thus more reflective surfaces on roofs and roads within cities would significantly decrease demand for air conditioning and would even result in less smog because hotter weather accelerates the production of ground-level ozone. They estimated that widespread mitigation could cut national air-conditioning energy use by about 20% and save more than $10 billion a year. Separately, the same researchers noted that cities like Los Angeles had already warmed several degrees over the preceding decades, part of the broader heat-island trend their mitigation strategies were designed to offset.
What this means for renters and homeowners
While few of us own the roof over our heads, it is still important information to know. If you are looking for a new home, a light-colored or reflective roof is something that might make a difference in how much your utility bills cost in the summertime. For those who own a business in a smaller building with a flat roof, this could be another way of cutting costs with a relatively inexpensive renovation. For those who worry about urban temperatures rising during the summer months, it is a reminder that some climate fixes are not high-end technology. Sometimes the solution is as simple as choosing a lighter color. Austin’s roof didn’t need new heating and air-conditioning systems, new insulation, or brilliant feats of engineering. All it needed was stopping the absorption of so much sunlight. Twenty-five years on, that seems like one of the simplest wins in the whole climate-and-energy playbook.
