If you have ever eaten oysters at a coastal restaurant, you have benefited from something you probably never think about: forests. That is the idea behind one of the more overlooked environmental stories of the last 40 years, from a small bay in Japan. This account is based on an interview Shigeatsu Hatakeyama, a Japanese oyster farmer, gave to UN News, published in May 2017 ahead of that year's UN Ocean Conference.

A bay turning red

According to the case study published by Japan's Ministry of the Environment, water quality in the bay had seriously degraded by around 1970. Concrete had hardened the banks of the Ohkawa River, and a growing flow of domestic and farm wastewater was pouring into it, weakening the river's natural ability to filter itself; together, these triggered frequent summer red tides, the algae blooms behind the trouble. His oysters absorbed it and turned red too, earning the grim nickname "blood oysters." They could no longer be sold and had to be thrown out. That was the moment his fishing community decided something had to change.

Why trees, not the ocean itself
Most people would try to fix a polluted bay by working on the bay. Hatakeyama looked upstream instead. In 1989, he and his fellow fishermen began planting trees along the Okawa River, which flows down from the mountains into Kesennuma Bay. Part of his reasoning came from a trip to France, where a French scholar had invited him to visit. He toured the Loire River estuary, a well-known oyster-farming region, and noticed thick forests lining its banks. He came away convinced that healthy forests upstream were connected to healthy oyster beds downstream.

Oysters need a mix of salty seawater and fresh river water to grow well, and they feed on phytoplankton, tiny plant-like organisms that drift near the surface. Phytoplankton need nutrients to grow, and one of the most important is iron. This is where the science starts to catch up with what Hatakeyama noticed by instinct.

What the research actually says about iron and the ocean
Iron sounds like an odd thing to worry about in an ocean full of water. But in large parts of the world's oceans, iron is scarce, and phytoplankton growth slows down without it. According to the 1988 study, ‘Iron deficiency limits phytoplankton growth in the north-east Pacific subarctic,’ published in the journal Nature by oceanographers John Martin and Steve Fitzwater, adding small amounts of dissolved iron to nutrient-rich seawater caused phytoplankton to use up nutrients far faster and grow more chlorophyll, showing that iron shortage was the main thing holding back marine plant growth in the waters they tested.

Scientists have kept building on that finding. The 2010 review, ‘The biogeochemical cycle of iron in the ocean,’ in Nature Geoscience by researchers Philip Boyd and Michael Ellwood found that iron availability controls phytoplankton growth across large stretches of the global ocean, and the ocean receives iron from natural sources such as desert dust, coastal sediments, sea ice, and hydrothermal vents.

Hatakeyama's own account adds a related piece: he credits Hokkaido University researcher Katsuhiko Matsunaga's work on how decaying forest leaves add iron-carrying compounds to rivers for giving scientific grounding to his tree-planting campaign. Healthier forests, in his view, meant cleaner, more nutrient-balanced water flowing to his oysters.

A story that fits closer to home than you might think
This is not just a story unique to Japan. American researchers have documented a similar pattern on the US East Coast. According to the summary of a USDA-led research study, done with the US Geological Survey and Penn State across the Chesapeake Bay watershed, forested buffer strips along streams cut nitrogen pollution reaching waterways by roughly 17 to 56 percent.

The paper also reports that the buffers did not just improve water quality in the abstract: in the Chesapeake watershed, more than 20,000 riparian buffer contracts had already been enrolled through federal conservation programs. But the authors warn that gullies and ditches often short-circuit the system, cutting the buffers’ ability to treat runoff by an average of 37% and showing that maintenance matters as much as planting trees.

The Chesapeake is one of the most important oyster-growing regions in the country, so the link between trees and shellfish is not a foreign idea to American watershed science either.

What happened when Hatakeyama's bay was destroyed
In March 2011, a 20-meter-high tsunami hit northeast Japan and wiped out Hatakeyama's entire operation: boats, aquaculture rafts, and equipment. He assumed his business was finished, and living creatures in the bay disappeared. But by around May that year, about two months after the disaster, marine life had begun reappearing, and a visiting Kyoto University research team told him plankton levels were already healthy enough to feed his oysters. Hatakeyama credits decades of tree planting for that quick recovery. He received the UN's Forest Hero Award the following year, in 2012.

Why this matters for young people today
For a generation that thinks about climate anxiety, food systems, and where seafood actually comes from, this story is a reminder that environmental problems are often connected in ways that are not obvious. A dying bay may not always have a problem with the bay itself. Sometimes the fix could be a mountain, a river, and patience. Since 1990, a year after his reforestation campaign began, Hatakeyama's organization has also run an education program for local schoolchildren, who nicknamed him "Grandpa Oyster." During his 2017 interview, he said the program had reached more than 10,000 children. It is a slow kind of climate action, tree by tree, but by his account, it worked.
