Why Florida keeps sinking things on purpose
Broward County's waters are home to one of the nation's highest densities of artificial reefs, including retired ships, old barges, sections of old bridges, and yes, at least one airplane. The rationale goes back to a national plan on artificial reefs that the federal government helped establish in the 1980s, to provide habitat for fish where natural reef habitat began to decline.

The difficult question: what about artificial reefs?
The fish do appear when a wreck is sunk; that's not debatable. The more difficult question is whether the fish are new life which the reef assisted in producing or whether they are simply existing fish from neighbouring habitats that came across the reef when a new and shiny structure presented itself rather than open sand. This is known as the attraction-versus-production debate, and has vexed researchers since the late 1980s.

A different case: when artificial structures clearly help
Not all artificial structures raise the same ambiguity. A widely cited counterexample comes from deep-water oil and gas platforms off the California coast, studied in a 2014 paper in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, which found that these platforms produced more fish biomass per square foot of seafloor than nearly any other marine habitat measured, largely because their tall vertical structure gives young fish enormous additional living space. It's worth noting this isn't a direct parallel to the Marriott Reef; California's oil platforps are deep-water steel structures many times taller than a flat-lying cargo plane in 71 feet of Atlantic water, and they were studied under very different ecological and geographic conditions. The comparison illustrates the range of outcomes across artificial reef types, not a direct test of whether the DC-4 works the same way.
So is the Marriott Reef actually helping?
The evidence available doesn't settle the question either way. A 71-foot-deep aircraft hull is not, on its own, going to rebuild Florida's marine ecosystem, but it does appear to behave as artificial reef science generally predicts: it was colonized quickly, supports an active fish community, and remains notable enough that citizen divers continue documenting it decades later. Whether that constitutes a genuine ecological gain or simply a concentration of fish that were already nearby remains an open scientific question. What the four decades of REEF survey data do show is that the site has sustained an active, monitored fish community since 1985, a rare case where a citizen-science program has tracked the same artificial reef for this long.
