Six rats took a trip to space in 1983. They spent six days circling Earth inside a metal box. The box sat roughly a few feet from the astronauts, who were breathing the same air. No one at NASA was sure if the box could keep the rats alive without putting the crew in danger. The test was mostly successful. One problem, though, had not been anticipated: the water ran out before the mission ended. The mission was called STS-8. It carried the Animal Enclosure Module on its trip to space. The module was located in the middeck of the space shuttle Challenger. According to NASA's official STS-8 mission history page, which confirms the flight launched on August 30, 1983, and landed on September 5, the module was introduced along with a five-person crew. The crew featured Guion Bluford, the first African American to fly in space. Bluford's achievement, along with the shuttle program's first night launch and night landing, got a lot of attention. The rats received little attention. The questions the rats were meant to answer were just as important for NASA's long-term plans.

Why NASA needed rats sharing the cabin

Animal experiments had already flown in space and usually were sealed off in their own capsule or riding on uncrewed missions. STS-8 put the cage in the room with the crew for the first time, creating a genuine safety concern. Waste, odor, and airborne particles from the animals could not be allowed to drift into the air that astronauts depended on for six days straight. According to NASA's Life Sciences Data Archive record for the STS-8 experiment, the goal was to test whether the Animal Enclosure Module could keep rats healthy in orbit with no danger to the crew, since this marked the first time a cage of animals flew inside the shuttle's crew compartment. NASA guarded against contamination by flying pathogen-free rats, fitting microbial filters on the Animal Enclosure Module's intake and exhaust, and sealing the Module at key points.

Meeting the six rats

The six rats used in the study were male albino Lewis strain rats, bred to be germ-free, 56 days old and averaging 275 grams at launch, according to the NASA archive. A different group of three rats stayed on the ground as a control group for comparison. This setup allowed researchers to measure how spaceflight affected the animals' health, separating the effects of spaceflight from the effects of normal cage conditions.

What held up, and what didn't

The rats survived the flight, which launched on August 30, 1983, and landed on September 5 at Edwards Air Force Base. The containment system worked. The crew stayed safe. By that measure, the test was a success. However, the mission revealed two problems that NASA had not fully anticipated, both recorded in the Life Sciences Data Archive. The flight rats ate less than expected and gained weight more slowly than the ground control rats. Investigators traced this to how food was delivered inside the module: food was attached to cage slides, a delivery method that worked less effectively for the rats in microgravity than it had for the ground-based controls under normal gravity. Separately, the water supply ran out entirely for all of the flight rats before the mission ended. Neither problem was severe enough to threaten the rats' survival over the six days. The shortage exposed a real limitation for anyone planning a longer mission, where a shortfall like that would matter far more.

Why the water shortage mattered

This story could easily be overshadowed by Challenger's more famous achievements from that flight. For the engineers working on the Animal Enclosure Module program, the food and water findings were exactly the kind of data a short test flight is meant to produce. A system can look successful on the surface, the animals' cabin air stayed clean and the cage remained intact, while still holding a design gap that would only appear on a mission long enough to expose it. That is the value of testing hardware on a flight before trusting it on a longer one. Six days was enough to catch a supply problem that might have become a failure on a six-week mission.

Why this 1983 test still matters

This flight came early in a series of animal studies that NASA and its partners have continued to develop over the years. That work eventually helped shape the habitats used on the International Space Station, where missions last weeks instead of just days. Life support systems should be tested under failure conditions, not only under ideal ones. The cage that kept six rats alive for six days showed NASA that containment could work. It also showed them where to focus their next efforts.
