Beyond the edge of the solar system, a golden record carries humanity's greatest hits through space. In 1977, NASA placed a 12-inch (30-centimeter) gold-plated copper phonograph record on each of the twin Voyager spacecraft. The records contain 115 images, natural sounds, 90 minutes of music, and spoken greetings from Earth in 55 languages. Each record is protected by an aluminum jacket, which also carries symbolic instructions explaining how it can be played and how its images can be decoded. A cartridge and needle were included with each record.

The record was not designed as an ordinary vinyl LP. Its audio is meant to be played at 16⅔ revolutions per minute, a detail encoded into the symbolic instructions on the cover. That makes the Golden Record an odd mixture of familiar technology and alien-proof engineering: a physical phonograph that assumes its eventual listener has never encountered a phonograph before. Voyager 1 remains the most distant human-made object. NASA says it crossed into interstellar space in 2012 and continues its journey outward, carrying the Golden Record with it.

A cosmic mixtape, curated by committee


Carl Sagan led the programming effort behind the scenes, working with a committee and collaborators who had only a limited period in which to assemble an extraordinarily ambitious message. NASA says the contents were selected by a committee chaired by Sagan, with contributions from scientists, artists, musicians and other specialists. According to the Planetary Society, the record has been described as a kind of cosmic mixtape: a carefully assembled selection intended to communicate something about Earth's life, culture and emotions. Its music ranges from Beethoven and Bach to Chuck Berry, while its other contents move between natural sounds, human voices, scientific information and images of everyday life.

The engineering problem was more complicated than simply putting a record on a spacecraft. NASA's instructions explain that the record is enclosed in a protective aluminum jacket with a cartridge and needle, while diagrams on the cover show how to play the disc and reconstruct its images. And there is an important detail missing from the usual vinyl-player comparison: the Golden Record spins at 16⅔ RPM, not the familiar 33⅓ or 45 RPM used by many conventional records. The playback speed itself is encoded into the cover's instructions using a physical reference based on the hydrogen atom.

Sagan's committee was faced with an impossible curatorial question: how do you represent an entire planet when the available space can accommodate only a tiny selection of its sounds, images and music? NASA records that the team assembled 115 images alongside natural sounds, music from different cultures and eras, and greetings in 55 languages. The musical portion alone runs for about 90 minutes. What was left out matters almost as much as what made the final cut. The Planetary Society notes that the record's curators intentionally avoided depictions of war, disease, crime and poverty. Instead, the Golden Record foregrounded nature, human activity, scientific knowledge, cultural expression and everyday life.

This tension has also attracted academic criticism. In a 2021 paper in Space Policy, “Should We Lie to Extraterrestrials? A Critique of the Voyager Golden Records,” anthropologist John W. Traphagan argues that the records contain covert biases and can be interpreted as misleading because their creators made choices about humanity's representation without necessarily having the expertise of diplomats or social scientists in intercultural communication.

Why is it still important

The Golden Record's physical design was meant to make it extraordinarily long-lived. A 1977 NASA press release said that, because of its aluminum cover and the emptiness of interstellar space, the record was likely to survive for more than a billion years. Its survival, however, is only part of the point. The Golden Record was never a realistic expectation that aliens would soon discover Earth. Voyager 1 will not reach another star anytime soon. NASA estimates that in 40,272 CE, more than 38,000 years from now, Voyager 1 will pass within about 1.7 light-years of the star AC+79 3888. That is a close approach in astronomical terms, not a visit to the star system. The distinction matters. Voyager is not heading toward an imminent rendezvous with another civilization. It is simply continuing outward, carrying an artifact made during a very specific moment in human history.

That is what makes the Golden Record remarkable. It was technologically modest by modern standards, yet philosophically enormous: a copper disc, a needle, a few diagrams, some music, human voices, photographs and sounds, all assembled around one impossible question — what should humanity say about itself if it gets only one chance ? Nobody knows whether the record will ever be played. But the attempt itself has already become part of human history: an optimistic, imperfect and deeply curated portrait of Earth sent into the dark, carrying not everything we were, but something of what we hoped to be.
