Some conservation stories are stranger than fiction. This one involves a bird, a scientist, and years of daily dancing in a Wisconsin barn.

A whooping crane named Gee Whiz died on February 24, 2021, at age 38, leaving behind a family of 178 genetically diverse whooping cranes. That number matters, because this species almost disappeared completely. His story starts with his mother, and with a man who was willing to look a little silly for a good cause.

A bird who thought she was human
By the 1940s, whooping cranes had been reduced to a tiny handful of birds, and the species was still critically endangered decades later. A female whooping crane named Tex hatched at the San Antonio Zoo in 1967. She had health problems as a chick and needed constant human care, so unlike most young cranes, she grew up around zookeepers instead of her own kind. In birds, this early bonding is called imprinting, and it usually happens fast and sticks for life. Tex grew up believing she was human. She had no interest in male cranes and only wanted to be near people.


That was a real problem for conservationists. Every whooping crane's genes counted, and if Tex never bred, hers would vanish with her.

Learning to dance like a crane
Enter George Archibald, who co-founded the International Crane Foundation with a college classmate in 1973. According to Audubon magazine's profile of Archibald, Tex came to live at the foundation's Wisconsin headquarters in 1976, and Archibald had an unusual plan. He moved his bed into her enclosure and stayed by her side, talking to her constantly. As spring went on, he began mimicking the whooping crane's courtship dance himself, bowing, jumping, and flapping his arms the way a male crane would. Tex responded, and a real bond formed.

It took years of trying. Per Audubon's account, Tex laid her first egg in 1977, but it was infertile. More failed attempts followed over the next few springs. Finally, in 1981, she laid a fertile egg, and the chick hatched in June 1982. They named him Gee Whiz, after Dr. George Gee, the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center scientist whose collected semen helped fertilize the egg through artificial insemination.

The joy was short-lived. According to Audubon, just three weeks after Gee Whiz hatched, raccoons broke into Tex's enclosure overnight and killed her. Archibald learned the news right before he was set to appear on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, where he ended up sharing her death live on air.

One weak chick, one giant family tree
The International Crane Foundation's press release notes that Gee Whiz almost didn't survive either. His egg was underweight, and he hatched weak, needing a lot of human intervention just to gain strength. He grew into a feisty, territorial bird known for greeting even his caretakers with threat postures and loud calls. But he became one of the most reproductively important whooping cranes in modern history. Over four decades at the foundation, he became the patriarch of a family that now includes 178 genetically diverse whooping cranes, many part of the effort to rebuild the species' population in the Eastern Flyway.

The numbers behind the comeback
Here's why that matters. A 2025 winter survey report from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, found that the wild Aransas-Wood Buffalo population of whooping cranes has grown to more than 550 birds, up from just 14 adults recorded in 1941. That is the entire species clawing its way back from the edge of extinction, and captive-breeding programs like the one Archibald and Gee Whiz were part of played a direct role in it.

But the story isn't a simple victory lap. According to a 2025 study in the journal Molecular Ecology, led by researcher Claudia Fontsere, whooping cranes have lost roughly 70 percent of their historical genetic diversity despite this population growth, and inbreeding has increased. The researchers argue this is a reason the species should stay listed as endangered rather than being downlisted, even as headcounts climb.

Why this story still matters today
It's easy to think of conservation as something abstract, run by agencies far away. Gee Whiz's story is a reminder that it often comes down to individual people making strange, patient choices, like a scientist willing to dance with a bird every spring for years, on the small chance it might work. It did. Decades later, hundreds of whooping cranes trace their family tree back to one weak chick and one very determined man.

The next time you hear about an endangered species inching back from the brink, there's a decent chance the story includes someone who did something a little ridiculous, and completely worth it.
