On May 22, 1952, two Philippine monkeys were sealed in the nose cone of a rocket in the New Mexico desert. The flight was conducted by the U.S. Air Force, and NASA's official history office now records that the pair, known as Patricia and Mike, were blasted off aboard an Aerobee rocket from Holloman Air Force Base. They went up to a height of 36 miles, traveling at a speed of 2,000 miles per hour. It may seem strange, but the flight had a real purpose. Scientists wanted to see how the body deals with a sudden, hard push of speed and if the answer changes depending on how the body is positioned.

Why animals went to space before people

Before Patricia and Mike ever left the ground, nobody knew if a living creature could survive spaceflight at all. NASA's history office notes that some researchers were genuinely concerned that the effects of sustained weightlessness could be hazardous, even deadly, to a living body. A Space.com history of early animal spaceflight backs this up, explaining that scientists were once worried that a lack of gravity could cause an astronaut's heart and blood vessels to fail. Thus, months before a human climbed into a capsule, American and Soviet scientists sent monkeys, mice, and dogs first. Records show that back on September 20, 1951, about eight months before Patricia and Mike's flight, another Aerobee had already carried a monkey named Yorick through launch, weightlessness, and a safe parachute landing, though Yorick died of heat prostration before recovery crews could reach the capsule in the desert sun. That earlier flight, despite its grim ending, proved the rocket and parachute system itself could work, giving scientists the confidence to try a more pointed experiment on the flight of Patricia and Mike.


A seat versus a stomach: the real experiment

Patricia and Mike did not just happen to occupy their respective positions randomly. NASA's history page states that Patricia was in an upright sitting position, while Mike was in a prone lying position. The concept was simple: place two identical animals in the capsule, change only their position, and see whether that affected how they handled acceleration. It was an inexpensive early way of studying a question that would matter hugely when humans started flying. The decisions made in the following years about astronaut seating, harnesses and cockpit angles were built on exactly this kind of early groundwork.

The rocket, the mice, and the ride home

The Aerobee was a sounding rocket, a type designed to go straight up, collect data and come back down, not orbit the Earth. The Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum describes the Aerobee family as a workhorse line of rockets used for decades of atmospheric research after World War II. Patricia and Mike were not the only passengers on this flight. Two white mice, Mildred and Albert, rode along in a slowly spinning drum so that scientists could watch how they would float when gravity was briefly turned off. After a short climb and descent, the capsule carrying all four animals separated from the rocket and floated safely back to Earth by parachute.

What happened to Patricia and Mike after they landed

Both monkeys survived the flight without any lasting harm, a rare result for an animal test flight in that era. NASA's history page states Patricia and Mike spent the rest of their lives at the National Zoological Park in Washington, D.C. Patricia died of natural causes within about two years of her flight. Mike lived on for many years, until 1967, 15 years after his brief trip to the edge of space.

Patricia and Mike’s flight was modest in scale. There was no astronaut, no countdown watched by millions, and the flight did not even reach the altitude typically used to define the start of outer space. However, it answered a useful question at a time when no one knew how the human body would react to rocket travel. This seated-vs-prone comparison fed directly into decisions engineers would make later about how astronauts should sit and be restrained during launch. Space.com’s history of animal spaceflight reports that the U.S. continued to use monkeys, and later chimpanzees, for these tests all the way up to 1961, when Alan Shepard became the first American in space, nine years after Patricia and Mike’s brief, strange ride above the New Mexico desert.

Their names are rarely mentioned today outside of space history circles. But every time an astronaut is strapped into a seat designed to withstand the crushing forces of launch, some of that design can be traced back to a seated monkey, a prone monkey, and a short, successful flight in 1952.
