His interest in flight started when he was young. His father was a physician and professor of psychology. His mother was also a physician but did not practice professionally. She had an interest in art and the work of Leonardo da Vinci. This influenced Sikorsky's early interest in flying machines. At the age of 12, Sikorsky built a small rubber-powered helicopter that could rise into the air. This became an early sign of his interest in vertical flight.

Sikorsky entered the Naval Academy in St. Petersburg in 1903. He planned to become a career officer. His interest in engineering led him to leave the service in 1906. He eventually left the institute because he believed that the abstract sciences and higher mathematics being taught did not have enough connection with practical engineering problems. He preferred to work in his own shop and laboratory.

A trip through Europe in 1908 exposed him to the work of the Wright brothers and European aviation inventors. After returning to Kiev, he became interested in the idea of flying straight up with a horizontal rotor. With financial support from his sister Olga, he returned to Paris in January 1909. He studied further and bought a lightweight engine.

Back in Kiev in May 1909, he started building a helicopter. The machine failed. A second helicopter with a larger engine was tested in 1910, but it also failed to fly. Sikorsky concluded that the technology was not ready. He identified limitations involving engines, materials, money and experience. He then moved his attention to fixed-wing aircraft.


His early airplane work

Sikorsky began building airplanes in 1910. His S-1 biplane was tested early that year, but its 15-horsepower engine was not sufficient. He redesigned the aircraft and built the S-2 with a larger engine. It carried him on his first short flight. The S-3, S-4 and S-5 followed.

The S-5 brought further progress. By the summer of 1911, Sikorsky could remain in the air for more than one hour in the aircraft. He reached 1,500 feet, or about 450 metres, and made short cross-country flights. This earned him International Pilot's License Number 64. The S-6 series helped establish him as an aircraft supplier for the Russian army.

From four-engine aircraft to flying boats

Sikorsky also worked on aircraft with multiple engines. In 1913, he built and successfully flew the four-engine airplane called Le Grand, also known as Russky Vityaz or The Grand. The aircraft had a fully enclosed cabin for pilots and passengers. The source notes that this feature was not widely adopted elsewhere until the middle of the 1920s.

Sikorsky then developed the Ilya Muromets. It was first designed as a luxury commercial aircraft before being redesigned as a four-engine bomber for the Russian Imperial Air Force during World War I. After moving to the United States, he developed the S-29-A in 1924. It was a twin-engine aircraft that could maintain flight with only one engine operating.

During the 1930s, Sikorsky worked on commercial flying boats with Pan American World Airways. These aircraft helped create air routes where land runways were not available. The S-40 American Clipper was introduced in 1931. It supported Pan American mail and passenger routes around the Caribbean and to South America.

The S-42 followed in 1934. It was the first production aircraft built with wing flaps. The S-42 could take off and land at slower speeds. The S-44, introduced in 1937, had the longest travel range among commercial transport aircraft available in its era.


Why Sikorsky returned to helicopters?

By the late 1930s, changes in military and commercial air transport were reducing the need for large flying boats. Sikorsky returned to helicopter development. The conditions were different from those he had faced in 1909 and 1910. Engineering theory and construction methods had developed. He also had a trained engineering team.

In early 1939, he began building the VS-300 helicopter. The aircraft made its first flight on September 14, 1939. Sikorsky was at the controls. Sikorsky insisted on making the first test flight of each new design himself during his career. On May 6, 1941, an improved version of the helicopter established an international endurance record of 1 hour and 32.4 seconds.


How the VS-300 design worked?

The VS-300 used a single main rotor. The rotor provided lift and directional control. It also used an anti-torque tail rotor. Its purpose was to counter the torque created by the main rotor. This arrangement avoided the need for complex systems involving multiple counter-rotating main rotors. The layout became a blueprint for many modern helicopters. The company began work in an old barn on a farm near Roosevelt Field on Long Island. Sikorsky became a U.S. citizen in 1928. By 1929, the company had become a division of United Aircraft Corporation. It operated from a plant in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and produced S-38 twin-engine amphibians.


Awards and later years

Sikorsky retired as engineering manager of his company in 1957. He continued working as a consultant until his death. He received honorary doctorates in science and engineering. He also received honorary fellowships from scientific and technical societies in the United States and Europe.

His awards included the Cross of St. Vladimir from Russia, the Sylvanus Albert Reed Award for 1942, the United States Presidential Certificate of Merit in 1948, the Daniel Guggenheim Medal and Certificate for 1951, the Elmer A. Sperry Award for 1964 and the National Defense Award in 1971.

Sikorsky's Recollections and Thoughts of a Pioneer, published in 1964, discussed his career and his views about the future of aviation. The Story of the Winged-S: Late Developments and Recent Photographs of the Helicopter, revised in 1967, was an autobiography. It covered his life and work through 1938 and included material about his helicopter experiments from 1939 and 1940 and his later work.

Why the VS-300 remains important?

The VS-300 marked a point in helicopter development when vertical flight moved from repeated experiments toward a practical aircraft design. Sikorsky had attempted helicopter development about 30 years earlier but had stopped because the available engines, materials, money and experience were not enough.

By 1939, the technical conditions had changed. The VS-300 combined a main rotor with a tail rotor and provided a configuration that could be developed into a production helicopter.
