Immanuel Kant’s early study of fire reveals a surprising scientific side of the philosopher before his famous theories on morality and reason.
The subject was not an accidental detour. Kant had spent much of his early intellectual life trying to understand force, motion, matter and the workings of nature. His scientific interests shaped the questions he later carried into metaphysics, especially the problem of how seemingly different things interact and how order can emerge from natural processes.
His journey from studying fire to writing the Critique of Pure Reason was therefore less of a sharp break than it might appear. The same concern with relationships, causation and the structure of reality continued to run through his thinking, even as his attention gradually moved from the physical world to the limits of human knowledge.
Kant’s first encounter with natural philosophy
Born in Königsberg on April 22, 1724, Kant grew up in a household where nature was part of his earliest education. His mother, Anna Regina Kant, took him on walks through fields and meadows and encouraged his curiosity about plants, animals, the changing seasons and the night sky.His formal schooling offered little scientific training. At the Collegium Fridericianum, religious instruction, Latin and classical subjects dominated the curriculum, while mathematics and natural philosophy received relatively little attention. That gap would remain a challenge as Kant began studying the rapidly developing science of his day.
At the University of Königsberg, he encountered a very different intellectual environment. His teacher Martin Knutzen introduced him to Isaac Newton’s work, while Johann Gottfried Teske taught experimental physics and electricity. Those influences helped direct Kant toward questions about forces and physical processes.
Kant entered the university in 1740 at just 16. Family difficulties interrupted his studies, particularly after his father suffered a stroke in 1744. After his father’s death in 1746, Kant helped settle the family’s affairs before leaving the university without a degree and working as a private tutor.
That period away from Königsberg did not end his intellectual ambitions. Instead, it gave him time to continue studying and writing. His first major publication, Thoughts on the True Estimation of Living Forces, appeared in 1749 and dealt with a major scientific dispute over how force should be understood and measured.
From force and motion to a new picture of nature
The debate Kant entered involved competing approaches associated with René Descartes and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. One side emphasized quantities related to momentum, while Leibniz had argued for the importance of what became associated with kinetic energy. Kant attempted to reconcile elements of both approaches. His argument was not simply about choosing one mathematical formula over another.He was interested in force as something active, capable of producing change and establishing relationships between things. That concern became a recurring theme in his early philosophy. Kant increasingly viewed nature not as a collection of isolated objects but as a system in which things interact. Force, in his account, was closely connected with space and with the relationships that give physical reality its structure.
His early work did not represent modern physics in its finished form. Kant lacked much of the mathematical and experimental equipment available to later scientists, and some of his physical explanations were eventually shown to be incorrect. Yet his willingness to approach natural phenomena through general principles became an important feature of his intellectual development.
The 1755 cosmology that came before the famous Critiques
Kant’s interests soon expanded from individual physical processes to the origin and development of the universe. In 1755, he published Universal Natural History and Theory of the Heavens, in which he proposed a natural account of how stars and planetary systems could develop.His account included the idea that rotating clouds of matter could flatten and eventually give rise to planetary systems. This became known as the Kant-Laplace nebular hypothesis after Pierre-Simon Laplace later developed a related model independently.
Kant's cosmology also challenged the assumption that the universe existed primarily for human purposes. He speculated about the possibility of other inhabited worlds and placed humanity within a much larger natural order. Humans, in his view, were part of nature rather than beings standing completely outside it.
The scale of his questions was already remarkable. He was trying to connect matter, force, planetary formation, life and intelligence within a single account of nature. That ambition helps explain why his early scientific writings matter when tracing the development of his later philosophy.
Why fire became the subject of his degree
Against that background, Kant’s 1755 thesis on fire makes more sense. His A Succinct Outline of Some Meditations on Fire examined fire through the energetic model of matter that had occupied him in his earlier work. Kant proposed that bodies were composed of dynamic particles and that an elastic medium, which he called ether or “fire-matter,” occupied the spaces between them.He associated this medium with warmth and light and attempted to explain heat through vibratory motion. Modern physics does not accept Kant’s ether theory. The concept of a universal ether was eventually abandoned as scientific understanding of light, heat and matter changed. Yet his thesis illustrates how closely his philosophical and scientific interests were connected at this stage of his life.
The degree also marked a practical turning point. After years of interrupted study and financial difficulty, Kant had finally completed the academic qualification he needed to pursue a university career. His scientific investigations were helping establish him as a thinker capable of moving between physics, metaphysics and philosophy.
He followed the master’s thesis with another major work in 1755, New Elucidation of the First Principles of Metaphysical Cognition. The subject had shifted toward metaphysics, but the underlying concern with causation and interaction remained. Kant was asking how things affect one another and how events can be connected by principles. Those questions would eventually become central to the mature philosophy for which he is now best known.
From studying nature to questioning human knowledge
The road from Kant’s early natural philosophy to the Critique of Pure Reason was not straightforward. During the 1760s, he increasingly became concerned about whether metaphysical claims could actually achieve the certainty that philosophers often attributed to them.His doubts deepened as he confronted the limits of attempts to prove the existence of God and to explain ultimate reality through pure reasoning. The result was a prolonged intellectual crisis that eventually led to the period sometimes called Kant’s “silent decade.” In 1770, his Inaugural Dissertation distinguished between the sensible and intelligible worlds. More than a decade later, the Critique of Pure Reason appeared in 1781 and transformed the direction of his philosophy.
Kant would later become associated with the moral law and the idea that rational beings should never be treated merely as means. Yet the roots of that mature philosophy can be traced to a much earlier period, when his attention was fixed on forces, matter and the mechanisms of nature.
His 1755 degree thesis therefore occupies an unusual place in the history of philosophy. It captures Kant before the Critiques, before the Categorical Imperative and before his reputation as one of modern philosophy’s defining figures. At that point, he was a young scholar trying to understand why nature behaves as it does—and learning, through that effort, how difficult it is to determine what human reason can truly know.
