Illinois state Fair makes karaoke singers live their dream

Around 16 Karaoke singers got the opportunity to perform songs by Shania Twain, Jamey Johnson, Billy Joel, and Whitney Houston and win $500 on stage near the 500-pound butter cow.

A 49-year-old nursing home administrator, Tamika Swisher, from Kankakee, Ill., qualified for the Karaoke contest at the state fair but wasn't sure if she wanted to attend it. Her boyfriend, since 11 years, died of multiple heart attacks just a few weeks back, and she sang "American Grace" at his memorial. She was busy with her children, grandchildren, volunteer work, and job. However, the mourning continued.

She exclaimed how there are good days, but she only has good moments at the fairgrounds. She said it was emotional for her yesterday, and she would not have gone if she hadn't carpooled with Andrew.

Andrew David johnson is a singer (30) she ran into at various karaoke lounges more than ten years ago. They worked at the same call centre and got to know each other better. She told him they were karaoke friends until they worked together, and now they're friends.

Right after his education in Delhi's Mount St Mary's School, the late singer took up the responsibilities of a marketing associate in the hotel industry. After the short stint, he decided to follow his passion for music.



After working on several jingles for the next few years, KK got a chance to sing AR Rahman's hit song 'Kalluri Saaley' and 'Hello Dr' from Kadir's 'Kadhal Desam' and then 'Strawberry Kannae' from the musical film 'Minsara Kanavu'.

The duo sat in Andrew's S.U.V and went more than 150 miles southwest to the Illinois State Fair held at Springfield. The 16 contestants at the state fair won their place by coming first or second at various county fairs during the summer. The winner of the state fair karaoke competition would go on to win $500. The winner would also have the opportunity to sing a couple of opening songs for the Brooks & Dunn duo the same night.

Ms Swisher has won regional competitions called "the karaoke diva" or "Tamika Karaoke." It was her fourth outing in the state finals, and she had a real shot at winning.

Andrew sang in public in Chicago as a licensed street performer. Around five years ago, he appeared on "Steve" after one of his street performances went viral.
