A Republican town hall in Kootenai County, Idaho, turned chaotic when Democratic activist and former Idaho House candidate Teresa Borrenpohl was forcibly removed by three private security guards.

The incident took place at Coeur d’Alene High School on Saturday, where Borrenpohl and other activists heckled GOP lawmakers over controversial state bills.

Altercation with security

Teresa Borrenpohl was reportedly asked to leave by Kootenai County Sheriff Robert Norris, who was filming the exchange. However, she appeared confused about his identity and repeatedly questioned who he was. A video of the incident has since gone viral.

As tensions escalated, three men — later confirmed as private security personnel — approached Borrenpohl.

She was allegedly pulled from her seat, wrestled to the ground and dragged out of the auditorium.

Spectators protested, with some holding signs in support of voter-approved Medicaid.

One of the security guards was heard telling Teresa Borrenpohl that things would be 100 times better if she cooperated, The Independent reported.

According to Coeur d’Alene Police Department, Borrenpohl was booked and later released for misdemeanour battery after reportedly biting one of the guards.

Security concerns and political fallout

Police Chief Lee White confirmed that the men who removed Teresa Borrenpohl were from LEAR Asset Management, a private security firm. But Coeur d’Alene city law requires security personnel to wear uniforms clearly marked with “security” — which these guards did not.

Sheriff Norris and town hall organisers claimed they were unaware of who had hired the security personnel. Norris stated that he had remained at the event due to a recent threat against state Representative Jordan Redman.

The Kootenai County Republican Central Committee defended Teresa Borrenpohl’s removal, criticising protesters for supporting diversity initiatives but booing when the Bible and Donald Trump were mentioned.

But Idaho Democratic Party Chair Lauren Necochea condemned the incident as a violation of free speech. She said that democracy depends on First Amendment rights, adding that if people cannot question elected leaders without fear of retaliation, they are not truly free.
