Idaho Killer Bryan Kohberger Sentenced to Life Without Parole for 2022 Quadruple Murder

On Wednesday, Judge Steven Hippler ordered that the 30-year-old would serve four life sentences without parole, as per the AP report. He was sentenced for the first-degree murder in the killings of Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin, according to the report. Kohberger was also given a 10-year sentence for burglary and assessed $270,000 in fines and civil penalties, as reported by AP.

Kohberger pleaded guilty weeks before his trial was scheduled to start due to a deal to avoid the death penalty, prosecutors and defense attorneys agreed on the sentence, according to the report.

Kohberger Declines to Explain Motive for Brutal Stabbings

When Kohberger's was given a chance to speak at the court, he said, “I respectfully decline,” without giving any details on why he slipped into the rental home in Moscow through a sliding glass door early on Nov. 13, 2022, and stabbed four of the students inside, as reported by AP.

Judge Says Seeking ‘Why’ Only Gives Killer More Power

Hippler said, “I share the desire expressed by others to understand the why,” adding, “But upon reflection, it seems to me, and this is just my own opinion, that by continuing to focus on why, we continue to give Mr. Kohberger relevance, we give him agency and we give him power,” as quoted in the report.

City Left in Fear After Unthinkable Crime

His crime had horrified the city, which had not seen a homicide in about five years, leading to a massive search for the perpetrator, as per the report. Some students even took the rest of their classes online as they felt unsafe, as per the AP report. The about six weeks later, Kohberger, who is a graduate student in criminology at nearby Washington State University, was arrested in Pennsylvania, where his parents lived, according to the AP report.


How Investigators Tracked Bryan Kohberger

Investigators pieced the case together bit by bit, a discarded Q-tip found in the trash at Kohberger’s parents’ home helped them match his DNA to material recovered from a knife sheath left at the crime scene, as reported by AP. Cellphone data traced his movements that night, and surveillance footage showed a white sedan circling the victims’ home multiple times before the attack, according to the report.

Key Evidence Still Missing in the Idaho Murders

However, investigators said after Wednesday’s hearing that even after exhaustive efforts, they could not find the murder weapon, the clothes Kohberger was wearing at the time or any connection between him and the students, as reported by AP.

Victims’ Loved Ones Demand Answers

Dylan Mortensen, a roommate of the victims called Kohberger “a hollow vessel, something less than human,” as quoted by AP.

While, Kristi Goncalves, the mother of Kaylee Goncalves, told Kohberger, “Hell will be waiting,” as quoted in the report.

Then Goncalves’ father, Steve, taunted the killer for getting caught despite his education in forensics, saying, “You were that careless, that foolish, that stupid,” adding, “Master’s degree? You’re a joke,” as quoted in the AP report.

Kaylee Goncalves's sister, Alivea Goncalves told Kohberger, “You didn’t win, you just exposed yourself as the coward you are,” adding, “You’re a delusional, pathetic, hypochondriac loser,” as quoted in the AP report.
