An overall $28 billion package announced this summer to boost the US semiconductor industry has started giving results. A pleased President Joe Biden will be at the International Business Machine (IBM) facility in Poughkeepsie, New York, on Thursday to participate in the official launching of IBM's $20 billion investment programme at the Hudson River Valley facility.

IBM’s Investment

IBM plans to bolster semiconductor manufacturing, mainframe technology, and quantum computing with a proposed investment of $20 billion over the next decade. In addition, the company wants to turn the Poughkeepsie facility into a global hub of quantum computing development. IBM, however, did not disclose the breakup of the proposed investment.

The Chips and Science Package

The Chips and Science Act is the government's new policy to subsidise and encourage semiconductor manufacturing and development. The move is to counter the incentives offered by China and the European Union.

“Audio is one sense that’s always been sharper and more developed than the others [for me]. Right from childhood, I was surrounded by musicians — my mom was a very good singer, both my sisters were very good musicians and my dad used to play the tabla — so I developed a natural passion and affinity for music. My weakest sense is, however, difficult to say. I think [for me] sound is at a different level and all my other senses are one level lower.”

“My sharpest sense is my sight. I can spot an alignment difference or a logo colour and font difference in creatives within seconds. My teams have always used this to their advantage by showing me the brand creatives, even if the final approval authority has been delegated to them. My least sharp sense would be my hearing. I am not a person for podcasts. They don’t hold my attention.”

“Taste is probably my strongest sense. I am particularly sensitive to the taste of every single morsel of food on my plate. The same cannot be said about my hearing. I spend too long listening to music. I also spend quite a lot of time scuba diving when on holiday, because of which my auditory faculties aren’t that great. Thankfully, I am not hard of hearing yet.”

Since President Biden signed the $52 billion incentive package, there have been several high-value investments. Like IBM, Micron Technology announced its $100 billion investment plan for the next 20 years. The act is rare legislation with bipartisan support because the President is managing it.
