The Caribbean Basin's Latest Storm, Category 1 Hurricane Nicole, which made landfall near Vero Beach at 3 a.m. on Wednesday, steadily weakened as Thursday morning rolled around.

According to a 7 am update from the National Hurricane Center, the storm's peak winds dropped to 60 mph when it crossed over land. It was headed diagonally across the peninsula, putting it to the Gulf of Mexico by nightfall. About 30 miles southwest of Orlando, the storm's eye was centered.

All tropical storm warnings south of Jupiter in Broward and Palm Beach counties have been lifted. As the storm's wind field shifted northward overnight, the sun came out Thursday morning in South Florida.




The storm made landfall at 3 am Thursday, just south of Vero Beach, as a Category 1 hurricane with winds. After that, it quickly began to lose power. If a hurricane makes landfall, it means that its eye, which contains the strongest winds, has reached the shore.

Despite the storm's diminishing, rain and winds are still forecasted to affect most of Florida today. At 4 am, the storm's center was located 60 miles southeast of Orlando and was moving west-northwest at 14 mph.
