Hurricane Idalia intensifies, likely to make landfall on Florida coast, outages imminent, administration ready for rescue op

Hurricane Idalia is to plow through the Gulf of Mexico, it may make landfall on the Florida coast. Know how the administration and Governor Ron DeSantis are ready to launch the rescue operations.

As expected, tropical storm Idalia grew in strength and intensified into a hurricane on Tuesday morning. But it is forecast that it will further intensify and become a dangerous hurricane before making landfall on Wednesday. It is poised to gain speed and plow past Cuba into the Gulf of Mexico. On Tuesday it was centered 275 miles southwest of Tampa and was sweeping at the wind speed of 85mph.

The hurricane is heading towards the Big Bends of Florida, where it is most likely to make landfall. A vast area along the Florida coastline has been issued warning. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has said that highway tolls have been waived, and hotels have been asked to be ready to receive evacuees.

He also warned that severe outages are expected and 3,000 workers are ready to repair transmission lines after the hurricane passes. He said that everyone on the Gulf Coast from Tampa to northwest Florida must be vigilant as they are going to face some nasty weather.

Hurricane Idalia to make landfall


On Tuesday, Idalia was heading north at 15 mph, but it turned northeast and on Wednesday it may reach the sustained speed of 125 mph before it makes landfall. The center of Idalia may move over to the eastern Gulf of Mexico and it may hit Florida’ Big Bend on Wednesday morning.

Big Bend, where Idalia is most likely to make landfall, is mostly rural, tree-covered, and a thinly populated area. It has a population of 22,000 and it ranks 54th population-wise among 67 counties of the state.
Florida ready for Hurricane Idalia

The people and administration of Florida are waiting with bated breath to see if Idalia hits its region as forecast or if it makes a last-minute wobble. Hurricane Ian in 2022 and Hurricane Charley in 2004 curved towards a landfall a little earlier than expected. A storm surge -a sudden rise in the waves along the sea beaches, as high as 12 feet is expected in Flordia.
