Hurricane Hilary is hurtling towards California as the region is expected to receive heavy rainfall resulting in widespread flooding, according to meteorologists. Notably, a tropical storm watch has been issued for specific regions of Southern California on Friday, extending from the California-Mexico border to the boundary between Orange and Los Angeles counties, as well as encompassing Catalina Island.

As of Saturday morning, Hurricane Hilary was situated approximately 240 miles southwest of the southern tip of Baja California. The National Hurricane Center has categorized Hilary as a "large and powerful" storm, characterized by maximum sustained winds clocking in at 130 mph, as per a report in USA Today.

Early on Saturday, the National Weather Service in San Diego noted that Hilary had accelerated and deviated slightly eastward in its trajectory. Consequently, the period with the most pronounced impacts from the hurricane is projected to span from Sunday morning until evening.

In light of these conditions, the National Weather Service is advising residents to take precautions such as securing valuable items in and around their homes and refraining from driving on roads that are submerged due to flooding.

Hurricane Hilary Impact on Los Angeles, San Diego

Despite a weakening trend as Hilary draws closer, portions of Southern California might start experiencing effects as early as Saturday, as outlined by meteorologist Scott Homan from AccuWeather, the USA Today report stated.

Homan anticipates that San Diego could witness the onset of rainfall by Saturday evening, with Los Angeles likely to encounter rainy conditions on Sunday afternoon. Homan's projections indicate that locales such as Los Angeles, Anaheim, Santa Barbara, and San Diego could potentially receive around 4 inches of precipitation. Meanwhile, desert areas like Palm Springs and the Sierra Nevadas are confronted with the possibility of experiencing rainfall ranging from 4 to 8 inches.

The forecast suggests that Hilary will gradually weaken and transition into a tropical storm by Sunday afternoon, the report stated.
