After Donald Trump was sworn in for his second term as US President on January 20, 2025, he issued an executive order recognising only two genders — male and female — as assigned at birth.

The order has already begun to affect lives, including that of actress and model Hunter Schafer, who recently shared her personal experience on social media.

Impact of the executive order on Hunter Schafer

Schafer, a trans woman, revealed in a TikTok video how the policy change has impacted her. She recounted how her passport was reissued after her purse was stolen in Barcelona during the summer of 2024. To her shock, the newly issued document listed her gender as male, despite having legally changed her gender markers when she was a teenager.

For years, all her official identification, including her driving licence and passport, reflected her gender as female. However, this new passport was the first to disregard her identity, reverting to the gender assigned at birth.

Hunter Schafer’s response and concerns

In her video, Schafer made it clear that she wasn’t sharing her experience to create drama or seek sympathy, but to highlight the reality of the situation.

She expressed disbelief at how swiftly the change had occurred. She emphasised that no one, regardless of wealth or social status, is immune to such policies.

Hunter Schafer also pointed out that the issue extends beyond the gender marker itself. She said that the real issue is the broader erasure of transgender identities. While she personally does not feel defined by a letter on her passport, she acknowledged that the change would make daily life more difficult, particularly when dealing with border officials and other authorities.

Hunter Schafer’s stance

Schafer ended her message with a firm stance, asserting that no policy or passport change could alter her identity. She criticised the administration for its decision and voiced concern for other trans individuals who might face even greater challenges under the new rules.
