This comes after earlier this month, the plea deal on the tax and gun charges against Hunter Biden’s son failed.
David Weiss is a Delaware US Attorney and as per reports, he asked Garland to be appointed as special counsel on Tuesday. The US Attorney later concluded that it was in the public interest after considering the request put forth by Weiss.
The developments come in the background of Republicans pushing for an inquiry into Hunter Biden’s business dealings especially as public opinion regarding US Presidential elections continues to grow.
Garland, at the US Department of Justice, explained that he was elevating the HUnter Biden probe “in public interest” while adding that Weiss’ appointment as special counsel confirms his commitment to provide all resources to Weiss.

According to Garland, as the special counsel in the Hunter Biden investigation, Weiss will continue to have the same power as well as the responsibility to “oversee the investigation and decide where, when and whether to file charges”.
The court filings have revealed that prosecutors intended to drop the misdemeanor tac charges against Hunter Biden in Delaware. Instead, the prosecutors reportedly proposed to bring the charges in California and Washington DC, which are the two places where according to prosecutors, the alleged acts were conducted by Joe Biden’s son.
