The use of coconut milk has become a common practice for DIY hair care. It is considered by many to be an effective natural remedy for achieving longer and stronger hair. Thanks to the internet, people have started believing that coconut milk can make hair grow faster. However, science does not agree entirely.

Firstly, scientific studies about the effectiveness of coconut milk have focused primarily on coconut oil, which does seem to have some protective effects on hair but none regarding faster hair growth.

What the research actually supports

As per a popular study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Science, coconut oil has been seen to minimize the protein loss in damaged and intact hair. The importance here lies in the fact that proteins constitute the main component of the hair, which is lost in excess with washes and styling, making the strands brittle and susceptible to breakage.

Minimized hair breakage results in longer hair, giving the impression of hair growth despite the rate of hair formation remaining unaffected. This is an essential point as there is a difference between hair formation and hair elongation.
Yet another recently published study by the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology suggests that coconut-based oils may enhance hair strength, elasticity, and protection against breakage. In simple terms, it means that the effect of such substances consists in strengthening hair, not in its accelerated growth.

Therefore, any feeling of increased hair growth as a result of the application of coconut milk masks refers to decreased hair breakage.

Why coconut oil gets more scientific attention

The excitement surrounding coconut is largely due to the unusual fatty acid profile of coconut oil. According to one study, lauric acid, one of the major fatty acids found in coconut oil, might be more effective at penetrating the hair shaft compared to some other oils.

This could be the reason for coconut oil being widely used as a pre-shampoo conditioner in many societies. It may prevent wear from brushing, shampooing, and thermal damage.

Coconut milk may share similar qualities in terms of applications, especially as a hair mask, since it helps moisturize and soften hair. However, coconut milk is not as well-researched as pure coconut oil.
In any case, the claim that coconut milk "rejuvenates" hair growth is premature.

Where coconut milk may still help

But this doesn’t make coconut milk any less useful. In terms of conditioning, it may help create more appealing hair through increased manageability and reduction of friction, as well as making brittle hair softer.

A 2021 study also found that topically applied coconut oil might contribute to a healthy scalp condition through the modulation of the scalp microbiome, which contributes to a healthy scalp condition. In their study, scientists analyzed dandruff-susceptible scalps and found significant changes in the microenvironment of the scalp.

This isn’t proof of hair regrowth, but it suggests that coconut-containing products may contribute to creating favorable conditions for hair to remain on the head rather than fall out.

What coconut milk cannot do

Coconut milk cannot help reverse pattern baldness or activate dormant hair follicles, nor function as an effective hair regrowth remedy. If hair loss occurs due to hormonal reasons, genetic factors, nutritional problems, or skin-related issues, then the application of a coconut milk mask will have no effect on the cause.

It has been stressed in scientific circles that this is the point where cosmetic care recommendations online mix with actual medical advice.

A recent study concerning myths in hair regrowth therapies pointed out that natural hair treatments are advertised with higher promises than substantiated by evidence. Coconut milk hair treatments are definitely one such product group.

Why it feels like it works

This positive effect on hair texture could be the source of coconut milk’s reputation. Hair feels smoother, less frizzy, shinier, and easier to detangle; thus, the perception of healthier and thicker hair may occur almost instantly. This is a tangible advantage.

However, if hair breakage reduces over time, hair will grow longer. This is fundamentally different from promoting biological hair growth. There might be some grounds for using coconut milk in hair care, but definitely not as a miracle hair growth solution.

The most substantiated effects include moisturizing, softening, minimizing hair breakage, and perhaps retaining its length. All this is mostly due to coconut oil rather than coconut milk. Thus, yes, coconut milk will likely improve your hair's appearance and preserve its existing length. However, given scientific data, coconut milk should rather be viewed as an additional hair conditioner, rather than a scientifically proven hair growth booster.

And this is actually quite sufficient justification.
