With the warming weather and the return of backyard barbecues, it seems that many people in America have now started to unveil their grills from their storage places, where they were left unused for many months. However, according to experts, before starting to cook anything on the grill, it is best to give it a deep cleaning first.

The importance of a clean grill goes beyond aesthetics. Grease, food residues, and carbon buildups can actually alter the taste of food, cause flare-ups, and ultimately affect the lifespan of the grill. In fact, according to the National Fire Protection Association, grilling fires are common, with failure to clean being one of the reasons for flare-ups.

It can be said that the process of cleaning your grill at the beginning of the barbecue season is more important than mere maintenance.

Burn off winter residue first

Another easy way to start is by heating. Weber, among other grill makers, suggests turning on the grill at its highest temperature for 15 minutes to free any sticky foods on the grill grates. Carbonization will make it easier for you to brush off the residues using a grill brush.

In case of gas grills, one needs to check the burners when heating the grill, as the clogged holes in the burners create uneven flames, causing hot spots. In the case of a charcoal grill, all the old ashes must be cleaned out since water trapped in them will accelerate the process of corrosion.

Scrub grates for better flavor

These grates collect leftover grease as well as other residues such as seasoning and char from prior food cooked on the device. The grill brush is useful for scrubbing the carbon residue off the grates. However, there are also those who use grill stones or even crumpled aluminum foil for the task. When the grates require a more thorough cleaning, one can soak them in warm water and dish detergent to loosen grease deposits.

For eco-friendly options, some property owners use vinegar as a cleaning substance. It is advisable to make a mixture of equal amounts of vinegar and water that will be used for the grates cleaning process. This practice has been promoted for years by the United States Department of Agriculture.

Following the cleaning procedure, many people coat their grates with a little oil.

Do not ignore grease traps and drip pans

This is perhaps the most underrated step. The grease trays and grease pans gradually accumulate grease and cooking oils. Over time, these can cause smoke, odor, and even a fire hazard. These can also contaminate foods because the old, burnt grease can be mixed with the newly cooked foods.

Simply remove and clean the grease catchers using hot soap and water. If there are disposable liners in place, change them before each grilling season begins.

This one step alone can make a huge difference.

Check the inside of the grill

Cleaning is not confined to the cooking grates only. It is also important to clean the interior hood. Black flakes similar to peeling paint may appear inside the hood; however, this is generally a sign of carbonized grease that should be cleaned with a grill scraper since it may contaminate your food.

When dealing with gas grills, check burners, ignitions, and gas lines. The Consumer Product Safety Commission advises conducting this test prior to using the grill to detect any possible leaks or faulty connections.

If you own a charcoal grill, make sure to inspect the vents and ash catcher. Like cast iron, grills can also benefit from a process known as seasoning. Once cleaned, apply some high-temperature cooking oil to the grates and allow the grill to cook for a few minutes. It helps prevent rusting and gives you an improved cooking surface.

Although it’s an easy process, it is often overlooked by many people.

Replace worn tools and accessories

The barbecue season is also an excellent opportunity for checking the equipment surrounding the grill.
A worn-out brush, a cracked spatula, rusty skewers, and even faulty thermometers can influence the outcome of your barbecue dishes. In case of any broken equipment, replace it with new items.

In case you have propane gas tanks, check their level; if necessary, get them refilled before the first large-scale event. When using charcoal, it is worth buying fresh bags.

A cleaner grill often means better barbecue

While good barbecue is often linked with marinades, smoke, and technique, the grill itself plays a big role.
When your grill is clean, heat distribution is even, unnecessary smoke is prevented, and your food can have its own unique taste instead of lingering traces of grease from the last cooking session. This could also be beneficial for avoiding issues that could ruin the fun you were having.

Taking the time to thoroughly clean the grill at the start of the summer barbecuing season might just be one of the easiest things to do in order to enhance the taste of your food.
