Gray hair tends to drive individuals to seek out the softest solution available. However, what "natural" means could vary anywhere from plant-based coloring to ammonia-free hair colors to gray-hair blending shampoo alone. Despite a variety of hair care products claiming damage-free results, research proves that the story is far more complicated.

The silver lining in all this is that gray hair doesn’t necessarily mean one must use damaging hair dyes. The downside? It usually comes with less-than-stellar coverage and durability.

Why surface color may be kinder to hair

In order to reduce any damage as much as possible, professionals recommend hair coloration that does not drastically alter the structure of the hair.

According to one review conducted in the field of cosmetics and published in the journal "Cosmetics", temporary or semi-permanent coloring does not penetrate into the cortex of hair but rather remains on its surface. This is important since such hair coloring methods do not require opening of the cuticle layer through ammonia or other strong oxidizing compounds.
In plain language, minimal changes in hair's structure mean minimal pressure on fragile hair fibers.

For this reason, many consumers nowadays favor the development of temporary or glossing coloring and hair color depositions since such products can be safely used for damaged or aging hair. For instance, one systematic review carried out in the field of cosmetic dermatology and published in the "Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology" reported an increasing popularity of coloring shampoos among consumers who find it easier to cover their grays by using these products.

The disadvantage is that this method cannot completely remove gray hairs.

What can permanent dye do to the hair shaft?

Oxidative dyes will always give the longest-lasting gray hair coverage. However, longevity is usually not the only factor considered when using hair coloring. An analysis conducted by researchers at the International Journal of Cosmetic Science shows that oxidation dyes for covering gray hairs last longer compared to coating dyes, but the former were shown to cause cuticle damage and protein loss in the hair fiber.

Indeed, research has shown how continued exposure to hair dyeing processes causes alterations in hair structures. A controlled experiment investigating the effect of continuous hair dyeing showed that the mechanical properties of the hair were affected by this process. In other words, what gives the longest gray hair coverage may not always be gentle to the hair.

Why ammonia-free and PPD-free matter

For those who seek more effective results but are hesitant to commit fully to conventional dyes, there is much in the formulation that counts. According to research done by Clinical, Cosmetic and Investigational Dermatology, ammonia-free and PPD-free formulas may prove beneficial for addressing certain issues associated with traditional dyes, such as cuticle and scalp problems.

Not every "clean" hair dye, however, can be said to offer total safety. Still, there seems to be room for improving the formula to provide better performance. In order to do that, one will likely have to go past the label and consider the formulation of each product.

Can botanical dyes be safer?

The plant-derived colorants often enjoy a reputation for being completely safe, but recent evidence shows otherwise.
While henna can prove relatively safer as a product, it may not be suitable for all users because of its warm color and the limited number of shades available. Moreover, some of the plants used in coloring products have been associated with allergic reactions, such as the case with natural indigo dye.

Patch testing is recommended by experts in spite of the claims surrounding herbal and natural products.
What is more, there has been much hype about natural hair colors capable of reversing hair graying. In fact, a review conducted in 2025 stressed that hair graying is a condition caused by pigment depletion and, thus, is not something that can be treated by cosmetic products. Although some plant-based components are under investigation regarding their ability to reverse hair graying, no scientific evidence exists to date.

How to choose the least damaging option

If your top goal is to improve the appearance of your hair, science recommends following one rule only: go for the most lenient formulation that offers adequate coverage.

This might include hair glosses for graying or pigmented shampoos. Alternatively, the option to consider could be a low-impact permanent hair color without ammonia applied less frequently. But according to specialists, what truly makes the difference in preventing hair damage is being careful not to over-process.

This might mean extending intervals between sessions, focusing on treatment products, and allowing a more subtle blending rather than full coverage.

Can you hide your grays without harming your hair then? In general, the answer is positive, yet there are limits. While the most lenient hair coloring solutions will provide more temporary results, this might actually be precisely what you want.
