Facebook groups, Reddit forums, and TikTok videos have all contributed to the mystery surrounding the murders of four college students. According to experts, they are unlikely to aid in the investigation.

Authorities pulled back a previous statement on the deaths of four University of Idaho students on Wednesday, fuelling animosity against the police and giving birth to amateur investigators trying to unravel the case. Mourners gathered at the University of Idaho for a surveillance Wednesday evening, the very night the Moscow Police Department stated that a previous statement from the Prosecutor's Office at Latah County saying that the suspects especially scrutinised at this living and one or more of the residents were targeted a miscommunication.

Following the event, the department also classified the killings as a targeted attack.

With little data about the case accessible to the public, several people have taken it upon themselves to investigate. Due to cyber sleuthing, the hundreds of tips and calls provided to local, state, and federal investigators can help identify likely rules and oversee potential suspects. Still, former FBI agents and law enforcement experts say they often hinder an investigation, divert resources and attention, and can even be harmful by entangling innocent people.
