How much will your Medicare premium rise in 2027 and how much of your Social Security raise will you actually keep?
The standard Medicare Part B premium may go up by $6.60 a month next year. That is far smaller than the jump in 2026. Still, for people living on Social Security, even a small rise matters, because the premium usually comes out of the monthly check.

The proposed increase would add $6.60 to monthly health care costs, or about 3.25%. While this would be a smaller rise than last year's increase, it could still affect retirees who depend on Social Security to manage their monthly expenses.
Medicare Part B premiums are generally deducted directly from Social Security payments, leaving beneficiaries with a smaller amount to spend.
When will the 2027 Medicare Part B premium be announced?
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has not yet confirmed the official Medicare Part B premium for 2027.The agency usually announces the next year's Medicare costs in October or November. In 2025, CMS announced the 2026 premiums on November 14. The 2025 figures were released on November 8, 2024, while the 2024 figures were announced on October 12, 2023.
The Social Security Administration has said beneficiaries will be able to check their updated Medicare premium information online in late November. Mailed notices are expected to arrive in December.
How much could Medicare Part B cost in 2027?
According to the 2026 Medicare Trustees Report, the standard monthly Part B premium could rise from $202.90 in 2026 to $209.50 in 2027.The estimated changes are:
- 2026 monthly premium: $202.90
- Projected 2027 monthly premium: $209.50
- Monthly increase: $6.60
- Estimated annual increase: $79.20
This would be a smaller premium increase than the one introduced in 2026. At that time, the standard monthly charge rose by $17.90, from $185 to $202.90, marking an increase of around 9.7%.
What Medicare costs are already projected for 2027?
CMS has already released projections for other parts of the programme. The average monthly Medicare Advantage premium is expected to fall from $14.37 in 2026 to $12 in 2027. That represents a projected decline of around 16.5%.
Meanwhile, the average premium for stand-alone Medicare Part D prescription drug plans is expected to increase by less than $1 a month.
These figures are projections and do not mean every beneficiary will pay the same amount. Actual costs depend on the plan selected, location and individual circumstances.
Medicare's annual open enrollment period runs from October 15 through December 7. During this period, beneficiaries can review their coverage and make changes for the following year.
Who will receive the $90 Medicare Part B rebate?
Some Medicare beneficiaries are also receiving a one-time $90 rebate in October 2026.The payment was announced by President Donald Trump and is intended to help eligible people cover part of their Part B premium.
CMS estimates that around 20.8 million people enrolled in Original Medicare will qualify. However, the payment is not available to everyone.
To qualify, beneficiaries must:
- Be enrolled in Original Medicare Part B.
- Live in the United States.
- Not receive Medicaid assistance to pay their Medicare premiums.
- Not pay an income-related monthly adjustment amount (IRMAA).
Most eligible beneficiaries are expected to receive the money through direct deposit from the Social Security Administration. Others will receive a cheque by mail.
The $90 payment is a one-time rebate. It does not reduce the standard Medicare Part B premium for 2027.
The projected Medicare increase comes as Social Security beneficiaries prepare for a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) in 2027.
According to the Social Security Administration, the increase will apply to nearly 72 million beneficiaries beginning in January 2027. Retired workers are expected to receive an average monthly increase of $75.
The estimated average retirement benefit will rise from $2,095 to $2,170.
However, the actual increase in the amount deposited into a beneficiary's bank account could be smaller because Medicare Part B premiums are generally deducted from Social Security payments.
Medicare Part B premiums are reviewed annually under the Social Security Act. The calculation takes into account expected spending on medical services, the number of people enrolled and the prices paid for health care.
