Trump welcomed al-Sharaa to the White House on Monday, marking the first official visit by a Syrian head of state since the nation gained independence in 1946. During a lighthearted moment in the Oval Office, Trump presented al-Sharaa with a bottle of his 'Victory' perfume, spraying some on himself, the Syrian leader, and a member of al-Sharaa’s staff.
Trump passed the perfume bottle to al-Sharaa, noting that the second one was meant for his wife. With a playful tone, he then asked, “How many wives? One?” Al-Sharaa smiled, nodded, and replied, 'One'.
The visit follows the lifting of US sanctions imposed during Bashar Assad’s regime. Al-Sharaa, who led the rebel movement that overthrew Assad in 2024 and became interim leader in 2025, held a two-hour meeting with Trump, according to the Associated Press.
During the trip, Syria formally announced it would join the global coalition against ISIS as its 90th member. The US also agreed to allow Syria to reopen its embassy, paving the way for deeper cooperation on security, counterterrorism, and economic matters.
