As the episode opens, it came to the fore that Jesse Lee Soffer’s Character "Jay Halstead" didn't arrive home that night. Halstead has been harboring a secret for some time but hasn't shared it with his partner. It's unclear why he disappears into the night with Voight.

Halstead meets a nice guy named Lenny who is helping clean up a hazardous area and is shot while trying to save a pregnant woman. The two are reunited after Halstead clears up a robbery at a local pharmacy under uncertain circumstances.

As it turns out, Lenny was part of the crew of robbers who were after pills. In the wake of Lenny's injury, Halstead fights for Lenny's reputation. To protect his reputation, he begs Halstead not to tell his family what he did.

Halstead, trying to clear Lenny's name, stumbles upon one of Lenny's partners in crime in the warehouse. As Halstead stabs him in self-defense, his wife and Voight arrive. She calls the crime scene and creates a series of alternate events with Voight to protect Halstead.
