US President Donald Trump has announced plans to impose 25 per cent tariffs on goods imported from the European Union, stating that the trade relationship between the two sides has been unfair to the United States.

But the move could lead to higher costs for American consumers and prompt swift retaliatory measures from the EU’s 27 member nations.

Trump stated that the tariffs would apply to cars and all other things and suggested that the EU had taken advantage of the US by restricting American cars and agricultural products while enjoying unrestricted access to the US market.

The European Union strongly condemned the proposal, stating that it would respond firmly and immediately against what it described as unjustified tariffs.

What’s at stake?

In 2024, the US imported $605.8 billion worth of goods from the EU, according to the Office of the US Trade Representative.

If the proposed tariffs come into effect, they will apply to these imports, requiring American companies to pay additional costs. Many businesses may seek to offset these expenses by raising prices, either immediately or gradually over time.

Retail analyst Neil Saunders of GlobalData said that the tariffs would negatively impact both the EU and the US. He said that while the EU is pretty protectionist, the US has traditionally maintained a more open market.

Saunders added that if implemented, the tariffs would be extremely disruptive for Americans and painful for Europe.

Affected items

The 25 per cent tariff plan could affect a range of goods, including luxury fashion brands such as Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Hermes and Zara.

Saunders also warned that the EU might introduce retaliatory tariffs on US exports and that the tariffs could disrupt supply chains, particularly if they apply to essential manufacturing materials such as rubber and plastic.
