The 45-year-old snapped his driver in frustration after a tee shot on the second hole at Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland. Under tournament rules, players cannot replace a club broken in anger during a round.
The Spaniard completed the final 16 holes of his 26th major appearance without a driver in the bag. Yet, despite losing one of the most important clubs in his bag, Garcia delivered his best performance of the week on Sunday.
"I’ve done that 50 times, and I’ve never broken a club," Garcia told reporters on his return to the clubhouse.
García said he hadn’t intended to break the club and was 'surprised' when it snapped in half.
Despite a shaky tee shot on the par-5 second hole, Garcia recovered to make birdie - one of five on the day. He added just two bogeys to his scorecard and posted a 3-under 68, his only round under 70 all week.
Garcia, tied for 34th, closed out The Open with a 3-under total of 281 - his strongest round of the tournament.
