Proxima Centauri b was announced in 2016 following observations by the European Southern Observatory using the radial velocity method, which detects tiny wobbles in a star’s motion caused by an orbiting planet. Measurements published in the journal Nature indicated that the planet has a minimum mass similar to Earth and orbits within the star’s habitable zone, the region where temperatures might allow liquid water to exist on a planet’s surface.Astrophysicist Guillem Anglada-Escudé, who led the discovery team, stated at the time that finding a potentially temperate planet so close to Earth represented a major milestone in exoplanet science. However, he and other researchers emphasised that being in the habitable zone does not guarantee habitability.
What Makes a Planet Potentially Habitable?

In 2017, NASA and international partners announced the discovery of seven rocky planets orbiting this ultracool dwarf star, with at least three residing in the region where liquid water could persist. Although TRAPPIST-1 lies farther away than Proxima Centauri, its multiple temperate planets provide valuable opportunities for comparative studies. Observations with the James Webb Space Telescope have begun analysing the atmospheres of some TRAPPIST-1 planets to determine whether they retain significant gases or show signs of habitability.Another nearby system, LHS 1140, located about 49 light-years from Earth, hosts a super-Earth planet within its habitable zone. Spectroscopic studies suggest it may have a dense atmosphere, though further observations are needed to confirm its composition.

A light year represents the distance light travels in one year, approximately 9.46 trillion kilometres. At 4.24 light-years away, Proxima Centauri b remains unreachable with current spacecraft technology. Even the fastest probes ever launched would take tens of thousands of years to arrive.Projects such as Breakthrough Starshot have proposed using laser-propelled light sails to send miniature probes toward the Alpha Centauri system at a fraction of the speed of light. These concepts are still under development, but they illustrate how scientific curiosity about nearby habitable worlds continues to drive technological innovation.

While Proxima Centauri b is the closest known potentially habitable exoplanet, astronomers caution that the term potentially habitable reflects limited data. Current measurements provide estimates of mass and orbital distance, but direct information about surface conditions, atmospheric composition, and the presence of water remains incomplete.Ongoing studies using space telescopes and ground-based observatories aim to detect atmospheric gases such as oxygen, carbon dioxide, and methane.
