House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy may have to face a tough battle ahead as the new Congress convenes, risking becoming the first speaker hopeful in a century to not gain initial support from his own colleagues in a vote for the gavel.

Tuesday's legislative session marks the beginning of a new era of bicameral government as Democrats lost control of the House in the midterm elections. House Republicans are eager to oppose US President Joe Biden's plan after two years of a Democratic Party dominant position in Washington, even though the Senate is still barely under Democratic control.

While some of his most vociferous critics increased their condemnation of the Republican leader, McCarthy acknowledged the situation. The leader of the hard-right House Freedom Caucus, Scott Perry, charged McCarthy with not cooperating in good faith with his group, pushing for several rule changes ahead of the start of the new Congress.

Normally, 218 votes, or a majority of the 435 members of the House, are required to elect the speaker. McCarthy has a minuscule 222-seat caucus, so he can only support a few opponents. If some politicians choose to abstain from voting, a speaker can win with fewer than 218 votes, as Pelosi and Boehner did.
