In a letter accompanying the subpoena, Comer wrote, “The Committee has questions regarding the Department of Justice’s handling of the investigation into Jeffrey Epstein and his associates and its compliance with the Epstein Files Transparency Act."

He further added, "As Attorney General, you are directly responsible for overseeing the Department’s collection, review, and determinations regarding the release of files pursuant to the Epstein Files Transparency Act, and the Committee therefore believes that you possess valuable insight into these efforts," as per a report by Reuters and CNN.

Why are Epstein files under scrutiny?

The Justice Department’s release of documents tied to the case has drawn criticism from lawmakers across party lines.

Some have argued that the files were too heavily redacted, raising concerns about whether the public received a full picture. These complaints have fueled demands for greater transparency and accountability in how the records were handled.

The law referenced by the committee, the Epstein Files Transparency Act, was passed last year and requires the release of related documents, as per a report by Reuters and CNN.

What happens before the deposition?

The subpoena sets Bondi’s deposition for April 14, but committee engagement is already underway.

Earlier this month, the GOP-led panel voted on a bipartisan basis to compel her testimony. Ahead of the deposition, Bondi and Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche are expected to brief committee members in a closed-door session on Wednesday.

The Justice Department has been contacted for comment regarding the subpoena.

As the investigation continues, the focus remains on how federal authorities managed one of the most closely watched cases in recent years, and whether more details will emerge in the weeks ahead.
