The House of Representatives will vote to choose a new speaker on Tuesday afternoon and the dissenting Republican members are supposed to sink their differences. After the Majority Leader Steve Scalise was forced to drop out of the race, Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan from Ohio was chosen as the Republican candidate. It may look bizarre and ironical, but it is uncertain whether he will be elected despite Republicans holding the House majority. Talking to 'Fox News', Jordan said on Monday that the house needed a speaker and that the American people deserve to have their Congress, their House of Representatives, working.

House Republicans meet

In a last-minute bid to set aside differences, House Republicans met behind closed doors on Monday night and

Minority leader

One of the Democratic bigwigs Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York currently is the leader of minority in the House of Representatives. The Brooklyn native took over the House Democrat leadership after former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi relinquished the office at the beginning of the GOP-controlled Congress in January. Pelosi served from 2007-2009, again from 2009-2011, 2019-2021, and finally from 2021-2023.

Republicans' razor-thin majority

Democrats are the current House minority party, they hold 212 seats in Congress with one vacancy after the departure of Rep. David Cicilline of Rhode Island earlier this year. Republicans have a razor-thin margin, so near-even House numbers between the two parties are one of the key factors behind the lower chamber’s lack of a leader.
