Historic! Stéphanie Frappart to become first female referee at Men’s World Cup Costa Rica v/s Germany match

The FIFA World Cup 2022 has become more inclusive by introducing the concept of female referees in male matches.
Breaking the glass ceiling, FIFA appointed Stephanie Frappart to take charge of an all-female referee team for the upcoming World Cup match of Costa Rica and Germany.




Stephanie Frappart and assistant referees Karen Diaz Medina and Neuza Back will officiate the critical match between Germany and Costa Rica.

Besides Frappart, Medina and Back, Kathryn Nesbitt of the USA was also summoned as an assistant referee. FIFA has included two female referees in its officials’ pool for the World Cup 2022. These referees are Salima Mukansanga of Rwanda and Yamashita Yoshimi of Japan.

Frappart’s earlier achievements

Besides being the official lead referee for the upcoming match, Stephanie Frappart has previously refereed for other matches. She has previously refereed the following games –

• Men’s qualifier in March
• Champion’s League game in 2020
• Uefa Super Cup Final in 2019
• Ligue 1 matches

In the previous World Cup match between Mexico and Poland, Frappart was the fourth officiating referee.
Before the World Cup began, Frappart remarked that FIFA, including female referees, should be a step in making things happen on a broader level. She also added that it was a good sign from FIFA and the responsible authorities to include women referees in the game.
