Hillary Clinton said she would nominate President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize if he can broker a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine that does not give in to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Clinton, the former secretary of state and Trump’s 2016 election rival, made the statement to encourage Trump not to capitulate to Putin.

She spoke on the Raging Moderates podcast with co-host Jessica Tarlov. Clinton said Trump wants the Nobel Peace Prize and added that if he can end the war without forcing Ukraine to give up territory, she would nominate him. She emphasized that a real peace deal must not validate Putin’s vision of a “greater Russia”, meaning Ukraine should keep its land, as reported by The Independent.

Trump and nobel peace prize

Clinton said the president has a chance to be the “architect” of a deal that does not allow Russian troops to remain in seized areas. She stated her goal is to prevent U.S. actions that could help Putin and force Ukraine to capitulate. Clinton said, “If President Trump were the architect of that, I’d nominate him for a Nobel Peace Prize.”

Her comments come as Trump prepares to meet Putin in Alaska, marking the first face-to-face meeting during his second term. Trump has long promised to broker peace between Russia and Ukraine, even during his campaign. However, he has struggled to get Russia to engage in meaningful talks and has faced challenges with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, as per the report by The Independent.

Zelensky will not attend the Alaska meeting, but he and European leaders remain in close contact with Trump, stressing that Ukraine must be included in negotiations. Some critics worry Trump might give in to Putin, partly because he has praised Putin before and criticized Zelensky in the past.

Clinton said Trump would gain nothing by capitulating to Putin. She explained that a proper peace deal must include a cease-fire, no exchange of territory, and Putin withdrawing from areas he seized over time. If Trump succeeds in brokering such a deal, Clinton would nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize, which he has long hoped to receive, as mentioned by The Independent.

Trump’s peace efforts and world recognition

Recently, Trump has hinted at pursuing the Nobel Prize, posting about it on Truth Social, mentioning it in meetings, and having his administration campaign on his behalf. Trump has previously helped broker international agreements between Cambodia and Thailand, Pakistan and India, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda, and intervened in the conflict between Israel and Iran

Several world leaders, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, have nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize. Norwegian press reported that Trump called a minister “out of the blue” last month to ask about the prize. Trump warned there’s a 25% chance the Alaska summit fails, but if it succeeds, Clinton could become a surprising supporter for his Nobel nomination, as per reports.

Clinton concluded on the podcast: “You can dream, Jessica. I’m dreaming that, for whatever combination of reasons, including the elusive Nobel Peace Prize, President Trump may actually stand up to Putin.” Clinton emphasized multiple times that her nomination would only happen if the peace deal protects Ukraine’s land, forces Putin to withdraw, and does not reward Russian aggression, as reported by The Independent.
