Spike Lee is directing the re-imagination of the Akira Kurosawa classic thriller 'High and Low', which was released in 1963. The new edition of the film will see Denzel Washington as one of the leads and according to recent reports, Jeffrey Wright has joined the cast list.

Jeffrey is known for his Oscar-nominated film American Fiction. He has also featured in HBO’s Westworld and has played pivotal roles in Shaft, No Time to Die and The Batman.

Wright played the role of Lt. James Gordon in The Batman (2022) which saw Robert Pattinson play the role of Batman, a character adapted from the DC Comics world. The film also saw Zoë Kravitz and Paul Dano in trivial roles as Selena Kyle and The Riddler, respectively.


High and Low: A brief insight

The Japan-based storyline of High and Low released in 1963 saw the glimpses of the terrible world of crime in Japan, when a wealthy business-owner was informed that his son has been kidnapped and he will have to pay a heavy ransom for the boy's safe return. However, it was later discovered that the businessman's son was not kidnapped and the kidnapper had mistakenly picked up chauffeur's son instead. What follows is the journey and negotiation for the child to be returned back to his parents safely.

Whether High and Low's reimagination will follow the same sequence or not, is yet to be seen. However, much is expected from Spike Lee who has delivered films with strong messages that have treaded upon urban crime, poverty, and various political and economic issues. He is renowned for Jungle Fever (1991), Malcolm X (1992), Inside Man (2006) and many more critically acclaimed films. His works have featured renowned Hollywood stars like Samuel L. Jackson, Denzel Washington, Giancarlo Esposito, Rosie Perez, and more.
