Hidden gold IRA costs? Spreads, storage fees and custodian charges explained simply
Gold became very popular in 2025, not in mines but in brokerage accounts, as prices jumped 74% and searches for gold IRAs hit a decade high. Many Americans rushed to buy gold to protect retirement savings from inflation and the war in Iran, the report said. Gold is seen as safe because it can keep value when other investments fall. But before opening a gold IRA, investors should ask how much it really costs.

Costs can vary a lot, and bad dealers can charge tens of thousands more on a $100,000 investment, according to the report by New York Post. Investors must understand the full fee structure before signing up. Opening a gold IRA may cost from free to about $100 as a one-time setup fee, while yearly admin and custodian fees usually range from $75 to $300. Some companies offer “free setup,” but the cost is often hidden in higher gold prices.

Gold IRA custodian fees

Gold IRA custodians — like Equity Trust, GoldStar Trust, and Kingdom Trust — charge annual fees that add to dealer costs. A “spread” means the difference between what dealers pay for gold and what they charge customers. Legitimate dealers usually charge 5% to 10% above spot price, but predatory ones have charged up to 200%.

Investors can check daily gold spot prices on sites like Kitco, APMEX, JM Bullion, and Bloomberg, the New York Post added. A 2023 lawsuit by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission against Red Rock Secured claimed markups up to 130%. Storage fees at approved vaults usually cost $100 to $300 per year, and segregated storage costs more than pooled storage.

Gold IRA storage fees

Storage is required by the Internal Revenue Service, meaning gold cannot be kept at home or in a personal safe. Common storage locations include Delaware Depository, Brinks, and International Depository Services. Example: For a $50,000 gold IRA with fair fees, year-one costs may be about $2,850 or 5.7%. But with a high 33% markup, the same $50,000 account could cost more than $17,000 in year one — money permanently lost.
