Hezbollah's role in middle east conflicts: A closer look
Hezbollah's influence extends to its deep connections with Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, and Islamic Jihad, another Palestinian faction with Iranian support. As this complex situation continues to evolve, the role of Hezbollah in the Israe...

Since the conflict's outbreak on October 7, Hezbollah, an Iran-backed organisation, has been actively engaged in exchanges of fire with Israel along the border, intensifying an already precarious situation.
Hezbollah's Deputy Chief, Naim Qassem, made a significant statement on Saturday, declaring their readiness to join forces with Hamas when the timing is deemed appropriate. He stated, "We, as Hezbollah, are contributing to the confrontation and will (continue) to contribute to it within our vision and plan…We are fully prepared, and when the time comes for action, we will take it."
However, it's important to note that Israel has expressed no desire for a conflict with Hezbollah, and it has conveyed that if Hezbollah exercises restraint, Israel will do the same along the border.
Understanding Hezbollah and its ties with Iran
Hezbollah, founded in 1982, traces its roots to Iran's Revolutionary Guards. It came into existence during Lebanon's civil war (1975-1990) and was established as part of Iran's strategy to spread its 1979 Islamic Revolution influence throughout the region. Additionally, Hezbollah aimed to confront Israeli forces after their invasion of Lebanon in 1982. Over the years, this once-shadowy group has evolved into a heavily armed force, wielding significant influence over the Lebanese state.
Numerous Western countries, including the United States, classify Hezbollah as a terrorist organisation. The United States holds Hezbollah accountable for the devastating 1983 suicide bombing that targeted the US Marine headquarters in Beirut, resulting in the loss of 241 servicemen. In contrast, the European Union designates Hezbollah's military wing as a terrorist entity while sparing its political wing.
Reportedly, Iran has been a crucial source of weapons and funding for Hezbollah. According to the US, Iran has annually allocated hundreds of millions of dollars to the organisation in recent years. In 2021, Hezbollah's leader, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, stated that the group had approximately 100,000 fighters.
Hezbollah's influence extends to its deep connections with Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, and Islamic Jihad, another Palestinian faction with Iranian support.
