Several Reddit communities have begun banning links to X, formerly known as Twitter, following backlash over a controversial gesture made by Elon Musk at a recent high-profile event.

Musk, the majority shareholder of X, became the center of attention after making a gesture at an inaugural rally for former US President Donald Trump, which some critics compared to a Nazi salute.

While Musk dismissed the allegations as part of a “dirty tricks campaign,” the fallout has led to heightened scrutiny of X and its association with the tech billionaire.

The controversy has prompted Reddit moderators from various subreddits to propose and implement bans on sharing links to the platform, as mentioned in a report USA Today.

Formula 1 Subreddit Leads the Charge

The Formula 1 subreddit, boasting nearly 5 million members, has been at the forefront of the X ban movement.

On Tuesday, its moderators announced a trial ban on X links, which may become permanent.

The decision was explained in a post that criticized X for declining content quality, citing issues such as login restrictions, bot activity, and the prioritization of sensationalist material.

“There’s no doubt that over the past years, Twitter has become a low-quality source,” the moderators wrote, as per the USA Today report.

“We think it’s time to try and see how the subreddit works without content from Twitter.”

The move underscores broader concerns about the platform’s perceived shift in values and its evolving role in online discourse under Musk’s leadership.

Reddit’s Stance on the Bans

Responding to the trend, a Reddit spokesperson clarified that the platform has no overarching ban on X links, leaving such decisions to individual communities.

“Users can and are able to modify or issue their own rules within their respective forums,” the spokesperson said.

Reddit emphasized its commitment to freedom of speech and association, noting that some subreddits also prohibit Reddit links for similar reasons. The company’s decentralized approach allows moderators to tailor rules to their community’s preferences.

Other Communities Join the Movement

The Formula 1 subreddit’s decision has inspired similar actions across other prominent Reddit communities.

Subreddits such as r/LiverpoolFC, r/CHIBears, and r/Chess have seen discussions among users advocating for bans on X links.

In r/LiverpoolFC, a post supporting the ban received nearly 40,000 upvotes, with users highlighting the club’s values as a reason for severing ties with the platform.

A comparable debate unfolded in r/CHIBears, while communities like r/DnD have also floated the idea of banning X links.

Elon Musk’s Response to the Controversy

Amid the uproar, Musk has largely dismissed the criticisms. In a reply on X to a supporter, Musk characterized the accusations about his gesture as “an awkward gesture in a moment of enthusiasm, not a Nazi salute,” echoing the sentiment expressed by the Anti-Defamation League.

He further mocked detractors, stating, “The ‘everyone is Hitler’ attack is sooo tired.”
