Even though iPhones have been around for a very long time, there is still no easy way to add custom ringtones. But, it is still possible. For people who do not wish to buy ringtones or use the ones that came in your iPhone, there is an option to create your own ringtones using iTunes.

The process changed a bit after iTunes 12.7. As the ‘Tones’ library that users could previously sync with their iPhones has been scrapped. However, you can still manually place ringtone files on your phone. Any ringtones that you had stored in iTunes are now located at C:UsersNAMEMusiciTunesiTunes MediaTones on a PC or ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Tones/ on a Mac.

Step One: Get iTunes

Adding your custom ringtones requires iTunes on a modern iPhone. On Windows, install the latest version of iTunes from Apple. On Mac, iTunes is pre-installed.

Step Two: Choose the sound file for the ringtone

The next step is to select the sound clip you want to convert to a ringtone. Your ringtone file must be at least 40 seconds. iTunes will not allow you to copy ringtones longer than 40 seconds to your phone. If the file is long, you can also cut it down for the part you want to use through an audio editor.

Step Three: Convert MP3 to AAC

Now, you have to convert the MP3 format of the file to AAC format to use it as a ringtone. This step can be skipped if the file is already in AAC format or has a .m4r extension.

Step Four: Rename the AAC file

After step three, you’ll end up with two copies of the same song file in your iTunes library - the original MP3 version and the new AAC version. However, you need to change the file extension so iTunes will recognise it as a ringtone file.

Step Five: Add the Ringtone File to Your Phone

Finally, connect your iPhone to your laptop, either Mac or Windows. Tap the ‘Trust’ this computer option. In iTunes, click the device icon on the left of ‘Library’, then tap on the ‘Tones’ section under On My Device on left. Now, drag and drop the .m4r ringtone file from its folder to the Tones section in iTunes.

Step Six: Choose the Ringtone

Now you just have to choose the ringtone in settings > sounds & haptics > ringtone & choose the clip. You can also assign a specific ringtone to a contact.
