Google’s Bard announcement came less than two weeks after Microsoft disclosed it's pouring billions into OpenAI and other tools that can write readable text and generate new images.

Google's Bard is supposed to be able to explain complex subjects such as outer space discoveries in terms simple enough for a 9-year-old child to understand.

Bard is now open to trusted testers before Google makes it "more widely available to the public in the coming weeks."

Google claims Bard will also perform other mundane tasks such as providing tips for planning a party or lunch ideas based on what food is left in your refrigerator.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai called Bard an "experimental conversational AI service" which is powered by Language Model for Dialogue Applications (LaMDA).

Google and Microsoft are rushing into the space after the ChatGPT bot caught the imagination of web users around the world.

ChatGPT became a hot topic across the world for its ability to generate essays, speeches and even exam papers in seconds.

Bard uses data from the web to provide fresh, high-quality responses. "Bard can be an outlet for creativity, and a launchpad for curiosity," Pichai said.

Google will be combining the external feedback with its own internal testing to make sure that Bard's responses meet a high bar for quality and safety in real-world information.
