New Year's eve. Let's face it, there may be a lot of pressure to have the "greatest night of your life," and it frequently backfires.
However, now that lockdowns have finally ended and the holiday season is feeling more festive than ever, you might want to go big this year—or at least make an attempt to celebrate. But how can we celebrate New Year's Eve for less when money is equally scarce and our social reserves are low?
Here's how to make it memorable without worrying about budget, from inexpensive evenings out to at-home gatherings.
1. Organize a potluck
Perhaps an American idea, but hosting a potluck dinner or gathering is a fun and affordable option. Everyone contributes a dish, which is then laid out on a table for everyone to assist themselves. Establish a budget and get everyone on board, and you'll have a terrific way to get together, eat, and drink without having to spend too much on any one individual.
2. Play Video Games Online
Consider hosting a virtual gaming night if you don't want to host a party or go out but still want to do something. Send out a Zoom invitation and round up some friends or family for some after-dinner activities (no expensive food costs necessary)! Also include several mobile-downloadable interactive game alternatives, such as Taboo or Headbands. Numerous exciting online game suggestions are available for you and your friends on virtual gaming websites like Jackbox and Houseparty.

4. Get the kids to create a year-themed collage.
Prepare the tabletop with craft items and party food, then work with your children to make a collage of all they accomplished that year. Why not combine whatever they have, from special images to school assignments and trinkets found on walks, and allow them to use their creativity? You could even decide to make it an annual custom. Parents can either get involved themselves or rest nearby.
5. Host board games tournament
Invite some friends over, and ask each person to bring their preferred board game. Work your way through the classics this evening, participate in quizzes, trade, and rivalry games, and play till the new year. Perhaps even keep track of overall results and award champions with funny rewards.
