Helicopter crash in Ukraine: All you need to know

Denys Monastyrskyy, the interior minister of Ukraine, was reportedly one among 16 people killed when the chopper crashed outskirts of Kyiv.

A helicopter crash in a suburb of Ukraine's capital city Kyiv, claimed the lives of at least 16 persons, including the interior minister Denys Monastyrskyy, according to Ukrainian emergency services

About 25 people were injured during the incident on Wednesday, including three children. According to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SESU), they were receiving medical care in a hospital. 18 deaths were reported previously by a local authority.

There was no immediate official statement on the cause of the crash. Russia, which invaded Ukraine in February last year, has yet to comment.


What location did the helicopter crash in?

On the northeastern suburbs of the Ukrainian capital, in the village of Brovary, the helicopter touched down at around 8:20 a.m. local time (06:20 GMT).

The SESU helicopter, according to Kyrylo Tymoshenko, deputy director of the Ukrainian presidential office, was headed towards front-line positions in the country's east when it crashed.

Who were on board?

On the helicopter were Denys Monastyrskyy, the interior minister of Ukraine, his deputy Yevhen Yenin, and Yurii Lubkovych, the state secretary of the ministry of internal affairs.

Ihor Klymenko, head of the National Police of Ukraine, claims that all three were killed in the collision.

What was the crash's cause?

What had forced the helicopter to crash was not immediately obvious. Officials from Ukraine did not immediately offer an explanation and made no mention of any nearby Russian attacks at the time.

Andriy Kostin, the prosecutor general of Ukraine, announced that a probe into the event had been launched. Kostin stated in a message on the messaging service Telegram that "at the moment, we are considering all potential versions of the helicopter crash tragedy."

No immediate response has been received from Russia.

The helicopter accident, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, was a "terrible catastrophe" that had resulted in "unspeakable" suffering.

Denys Shmygal, the prime minister of Ukraine, echoed Zelenskyy's remarks and referred to Monastyrskyy's passing as a "huge loss" for the country's leadership.
