Heatwave alert: Brutal heat wave grips Eastern US, pushing temperatures past 110°F
A dangerous heat wave is scorching the eastern US, with temperatures soaring and heat indices exceeding 110°F. The National Weather Service forecasts the oppressive heat to persist through July, particularly impacting the Tennessee Valley, Southea...

“This will be a long-duration heat wave, with little to no overnight relief and high humidity levels, leading to an increased danger,” the NWS Weather Prediction Center said in a July 24 update.
Where the heat is worst
The most intense and prolonged heat is expected in the Tennessee Valley, Southeast, and Carolinas, with morning lows in the mid-70s offering little to no relief. Farther north, into the Midwest, Ohio Valley, and Mid‑Atlantic, temperatures will reach the 90s through early next week.
A sprawling heat dome, a ridge of high pressure trapping hot air, is fueling the extreme conditions, while abundant humidity makes it feel several degrees hotter. Forecast maps show the US blanketed in deep shades of red and purple.
A cold front is expected to bring some relief to the Ohio Valley, but much of the South will remain under major heat risk by July 30 or 31.
Average July temperatures in the lower 48 states have climbed 2.7°F since 1950. Scientists warn that persistent overnight warmth, now at record levels, prevents homes, streets, and trees from cooling, increasing stress on the human body.
Health risks and safety tips
Extreme heat is the leading weather‑related killer in the US. Prolonged exposure can cause dehydration, rapid heartbeat, and heat stroke. Experts say wet bulb temperatures, which account for humidity, show humans can become overwhelmed at much lower thresholds than once believed.
The American Red Cross urges people to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activity, and check on older adults, children, and those with chronic illnesses. If someone shows signs of heat exhaustion, cramps, dizziness, or nausea, move them to a cool place and seek medical help if symptoms worsen.
