HBO Max renaming starts meme fest as netizens share hilarious reactions; check here

Warner Bros. Discovery has announced the renaming of its streaming platform Max to its former name, HBO Max, this summer. They dropped the HBO from the logo in 2023 to broaden their appeal, but now have decided against it. This decision has sparke...

Warner Bros Discovery has brought back the name HBO Max for its flagship streaming service, which is currently known as Max. The name change comes two years after it was ‘rebranded’ to Max in 2023.

The company announced the recent move during their upfront presentation in New York on May 14 and is expected to take effect later this summer.

Warner Bros Discovery took to social media to confirm the return of the iconic HBO branding, which helped define premium television. The decision is a strategic pivot as the executives acknowledged the value of HBO’s name recognition and prestige.

The internet, however, has the wildest reactions to the name change.

The internet reacts with memes and mockery

The Max social team led the chaos as they posted memes and witty one-liners referring to HBO favourites like Veep, True Detective, and Game of Thrones.

One of the posts Max made on their social media, accompanied by a Matthew McConaughey GIF, read, “Explaining to my friends that I work at HBO Max again.”

The memes posted by Max’s social media team prompted the netizens to join in on the fun. One of the users queried if the next stop was HBO Max Prime; they added, “Let's hope they don't loop back to Betamax.”

Other users joked about the number of meetings the team must have likely spent debating the name change. Meanwhile, a few joined with their cold opinions, saying that they never stopped referring to the platform as HBO Max.

A user expressed frustration, stating that the executives likely took longer to arrive at a consensus on the name change than they take to cancel a show. Another opined that the corporation shouldn’t wait any longer and rebrand the platform as HBO Max already.

Name change and brand power

The streaming service had initially dropped ‘HBO’ from its name in April 2023, with an aim to signal a broader, family-friendly content offering akin to their rivals like Netflix. However, the top guns are now admitting that shedding the HBO branding likely diluted its impact.

Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and Max content, was quoted as saying that they believe the name HBO Max better represents their current consumer proposition. Bloys added that the name change indicates their covert promise to deliver unique content that offers value for money.

JB Perrette, CEO of Global Streaming, mentioned that their focus is to provide quality and distinct content for adults and families.

Warner Bros. Discovery enjoys robust growth. Its streaming operation has gained 22 million customers in the past year and converted almost $3 billion in earnings. CEO David Zaslav indicated that the corporation is still within reach of its goal of having 150 million subscribers by late 2026.
