But it added that she did not violate "standards for research misconduct".In a letter to the leader of Harvard's board on Wednesday, Chairwoman Virginia Foxx said that the prestigious institution could be violating the public's trust. It has also asked Harvard to submit any documents and communications related to the plagiarism inquiry into Dr Gay, as well as a list of any academic disciplinary actions taken against Harvard faculty or students since 2019.
Harvard replies
Replying to the letter, Harvard's board has said it became aware of plagiarism allegations against Dr Gay in October but has unearthed no violations of Harvard policies.Earlier this month, the plagiarism allegations against Gay surfaced with accusations that she lifted other scholars’ works in her 1997 doctoral thesis. It was also alleged that her four papers published between 1993 and 2017 did not have proper attribution.
Dr Gay faces demand to quit
Dr Gay has been asked to quit after her testimony during a congressional hearing before the same committee. During tense questioning, she said calls for the killing of Jews were abhorrent. She added, however, that it would depend on the context whether such comments would constitute a violation of Harvard's code of conduct regarding bullying and harassment. After this testimony, Dr Gay was accused of insensitivity and hypocrisy when discussing efforts to stem antisemitism on their campuses amid the Israel-Gaza war.
The university later said it would not discipline Dr Gay for her testimony, and she also apologized in an interview with the school's student newspaper.
