The horse passed away in the early hours of September 9 at Martha Farm in Chiba Prefecture, where she spent her later years under the care of staff and her longtime caretaker.

Haru Urara Cause of Death

Haru Urara died from colic, a condition caused by gas buildup in the intestines. Colic has a high mortality rate among horses. Japanese news outlet Friday Digital confirmed her passing.

Caretaker Yuko Miyahara explained that Haru Urara showed signs of illness on September 8. A veterinarian was called, and staff members stayed with her throughout the night. However, her condition worsened suddenly at dawn on September 9, leading to her death.

Miyahara said Haru Urara was in good health until just a day before her passing. She also mentioned that visitors from Japan and overseas had recently been coming to see the horse.

The name Haru Urara means “glorious spring.” She began her racing career in 1998 and became a media sensation in 2003, when reports highlighted that she had lost 80 consecutive races.

Despite wearing a bright pink and red Hello Kitty face mask that became her trademark, Haru Urara never won a race. She retired in 2004 after competing in 113 races, all of which ended in defeat.

Haru Urara became a symbol of resilience. Her betting tickets, almost guaranteed losses, carried double meaning in Japanese. The word ataranai means “to lose a bet” but can also mean “to not be struck.”

For this reason, Haru Urara tickets were often kept as charms against traffic accidents or job loss. Many of these tickets were sold for around 3,000 yen (about S$30).
